About the Author

James W. Robinson earned his B.Sc. (Hons), PhD, and D.Sc. from the University of Birmingham, England. He is professor emeritus of chemistry, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, he is the author of 250 professional papers, book chapters, and several books including Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and Atomic Spectroscopy, first and second editions. He was editor in chief of Spectroscopy Letters and the Journal of Environmental Science and Health (both Marcel Dekker, Inc.); executive editor of Handbook of Spectroscopy Vol. 1 – 1974, Vol. 2 – 1974, Vol. 3 – 1981; and Practical Handbook of Spectroscopy― 1991 (all CRC Press). He served on the National University Accreditation Committee from 1970-1971. He was a visiting distinguished professor at University of Colorado – 1972 and University of Sydney, Australia – 1975. He served as the Gordon Conference Chairman in Analytical Chemistry – 1974.

Eileen M. Skelly Frame heads a private consulting company, Full Spectrum Analytical Consultants and is Adjunct Professor, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York. Dr. Skelly Frame has extensive industrial experience in the use of instrumental analysis to characterize a wide variety of substances, from biological samples and cosmetics to high-temperature superconductors, polymers, metals, and alloys. She is a member of the American Chemical Society and ASTM International. Dr. Skelly Frame earned her BS in chemistry from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and her PhD in analytical chemistry from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.

George M. Frame II is a retired scientific director, Chemical Biomonitoring Section of the Wadsworth Laboratory, New York State Department of Health, Albany and is a private consultant. He has a wide range of experience in analytical chemistry and has worked at GE Corporate R&D Center, Pfizer Central Research, U.S. Coast Guard R&D Center, Maine Medical Center, and in the United States Air Force Biomedical Sciences Corps. He is a member of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Frame earned his AB in chemistry from Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his PhD in analytical chemistry from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

A satisfactory ending to the series

Match Point, the third and final book in the Lauren Holbrook Novel series by Erynn Mangum, is a satisfactory ending to the series.

Laurie's matchmaking skills have paid off--four of the couples she's matched are now married, and it's just time before another couple gets engaged. With all her friends married and her singles' Bible study basically the couples' Bible study now, there's no one left to matchmake. What's a girl supposed to do?

While Laurie is trying to find others to play Cupid with, the friends she's matched turn on her, and play matchmaker with her and her boyfriend, Ryan. Laurie's not sure how she feels about that. One matchmaker is enough, and she's already got that role filled. To get away from the constant discussions and pressuring toward marriage, Laurie and Ryan pull a fake break-up. It's a great plan until Laurie realizes one very important thing--she's in love.

This book wraps up everything in the series. Some parts seem to drag a little, but it's got the same fun parts like the previous novels--coffee, chocolate, and chick-flick quotes. If you've read the previous two books, the third one is a must.

All about Laurie

So when I was first looking at this author (and this series in particular) I almost read this book 1st. Reason: It was SO much cheaper than the other books!! And i'm just cheap, plain and simple.

But I'm so glad I didn't. So glad I started with the 1st one and read them in order. I'm sure these are great stand alone books but much much better as a series. You love Laurie and Ryan so much by this third book that you're absolutely dying to know what happens.

So you know when you're reading a contemporary romance and all the dialogue is perfect (and completely unrealistic) between the 2 main characters? Not so here. And I actually loved that about it! I could relate so so closely to Laurie! "Love" didn't feel like what I thought it would. And my boyfriend (now husband) definitely wasn't romantic like I thought he would be. But it was still beautiful. Still honored God. And I enjoyed that the love story here was so real and "common."

Something else I loved about the book~ You got every juicy detail you wish you got in every other book. Don't you hate when you're reading a book, and finally, FINALLY at the end the couple reveals to one another that they love each other, and SMACK- The End. Sometimes you get a tiny little Epilogue but otherwise. Nada. You gruel through 400 pages to get one smile at the end and that's it. It's like looking at a gigantic birthday cake and being told you can only eat one sprinkle of it. This book is how I wish all books were. There's MORE! I felt so satisfied at the end. I mean, of course I fell in love with all the characters so I'd LOVE to read more books about all of them, but even without ever hearing more, Mangum wrote the book so well that you can already feel what beautiful things were ahead for the characters.
Reading this was like getting the gigantic birthday cake all for yourself. Al a mode. With a venti cup of coffee. ;-)

Had to go out and buy the whole series

As a reviewer I get so many novels for free that I rarely buy books, but after reading the first book of this series, I had to have them all so I *gasp* spent money! Delightful reads with great movement and character development. Light-hearted and just what the doctor ordered for encouragement, chuckles, and healing laughter. The spiritual content was intrinsic to the character and tone of the book, and I found it refreshing. I highly recommend this author and the entire Holbrook Series. Sometimes subsequent books in a series are a disappointment, but not in this series! Start with book one, and read all three.

Clear exposition. Also a very well-made book--so call me stupid.

Herewith, the dumbest (preliminary, in the sense of I just got it in the mail today) review of MacLane and Birkhoff, 3rd Edition that you'll read. This book is very well made, with quality paper, and a buckram binding Smyth-sewn in signatures. Also from a more substantive POV: The exposition seems clear. More to come as I work through the text. I guess some reviewers have read all 600 pages and worked all the problems? Fibbers!

i used this text as my first algebra book. if you just began math and want to see a solid introduction to modern math this is it; self-contained and introduces many important ideas that are commonly used in modern math but typically not taught in undergraduate math courses.

Superb, if read with the right outlook

Birkhoff and MacLane collaborated for much of their careers, and their "A Survey of Modern Algebra", first published in 1941, was an easy-to-read, easy-to-teach-from, easy-to-learn-from early fruit of their collaboration. This jointly written book "Algebra", first published in 1967 and vastly improved in the 3rd Edition, can be far more difficult to tackle unless one goes at it with understanding of how to approach it. It mostly reflects MacLane's approach, rather than Birkhoff's, and MacLane was not only brilliant, but unusual among pure mathematicians, perhaps even idiosyncratic; he finally died at an advanced age a few months ago, and his passion for his field is reflected in the fact that he continued to advise graduate students well into his 90s, just as he had advised me (and criticized my thinking incessantly) as a graduate student more than 50 years before.

MacLane was far less interested in any particular topic in mathematics, although he was a master of many, than he was in how one should think about mathematics to understand it, do it on one's own, extend it, and most important of all, recognize when one had fully though through a problem and solved it, as contrasted to having merely produced a plausible discussion of it.

I know of no book on pure mathematics more worth reading than this one, but in contrast to some other reviewers who are probably clearer thinkers than I, I have to tackle it with great patience and care. The secret of grasping it without getting bogged down is to keep constantly in mind that MacLane filled in details without being much interested in them except as necessary completion of exposition. So, when you read it, do not concentrate on details; concentrate on overall structure of thought and exposition and then, later, come back to absorb details. That was how MacLane worked, and that was how he tried to teach his students to work. The key question always in his mind was: what formulation of axioms and structure is fruitful for attacking the topic at hand, and how can we use that formulation to create an inexorable train of thought leading to important results? This book, "Algebra" is very much a reflection of that way of thinking.

So, when you first read this book, skip freely over much of the development of particular topics. Instead, spend a great deal of time thinking about definitions, and about the precise way in which key theorems are stated. Spend time and effort exploring the question of why seemingly trivial variations of these would be less fruitful, or could even lead one into error. Skip from one part of the book to another, without getting bogged down in any one part. Ask yourself also why certain topics and certain cases are excluded. E.g. right at the beginning of the discussion of quadratic forms is a simple definition which begins: "If V is a finite dimensional vector space over a field F of characteristic not 2, ..." Pause right there and ponder over why fields of characteristic 2 are excluded from this definition; just skim the next ten pages without studying them. If you think hard enough to see why fields of characteristic 2 must be excluded from the discussion, the entire ensuing discussion of quadratic forms becomes crystal clear.

Once you have mastered the style in which the material is presented, you can quite easily come back and follow the details. And if you do that, I hope you will find this ook as rewarding as I have.

Esoteric

Good book from the theorists perspective but not a book that will help you learn and apply in practical situations.

Mr. Saaty appears to be gifted in this area and his development of the topics is clear and concise.

Initially gave three stars but changed to four since I am rating the book on content only (using other books for practice).

The Background of OR

This book is unlike Thomas L. Saaty's other books. It is readable. It broadly covers a variety of topics in Operation Research. The topics are fundamental to OR. I did not read the book straight through, but did read several chapters which interested me. In the last couple of chapters he philosophizes about the use of OR. Since the book was written several years ago, I will let the present practicioners of OR decide whether he was right or not.

About the Author

Prof. Dr. Peter Mittelstaedt is emeritus professor at the University of Cologne. His main research fields are Foundations of Quantum Theory, Relativity Theory, Philosophy of Science and Logic. He has published various books with Springer: "Laws of Nature" (2005, together with P.A. Weingartner), "The Quantum Theory of Measurement" (1996, together with P. Busch and P.J. Lahti) and "Quantum Logic" (1978).
Dr. Kristina Engelhard edited this 2nd enlarged edition of the book by Prof. P. Mittelstaedt. She obtained her PhD in Philosophy at the University of Cologne with a thesis entitled "The Simple and Matter. Inquiries into Kant’s Antinomy of Division" and she is currently Research and Teaching Assistant at the Philosophy Department of the University of Cologne (Germany).

The best tooth fairy kit out there!

My five year old recently proclaimed "I have a wiggly toof!" Turns out, it's actually TWO wiggly "toofs". Exciting stuff, right? The poor girl has spent the better part of the last five days trying to pull those teeth out, and THAT has been pretty entertaining. This is the cutest Tooth Fairy Kit I've ever laid eyes on. It comes in a lovely storage box and inside you'll find "Lunette, The True Story of the Tooth Fairy" written by Robin Cruise and illustrated by Valeria Docampo. A gorgeous hardcover book with a precious story that will have you falling in love with the tooth fairy all over again. You'll also find an adorable star shaped pillow with a little pocket to put your tooth in. And a tooth journal to record which tooth was lost, the date etc. Seriously, SO cute.

A Winner for Those Who Want to Lose... Weight

Like McLaurie's other book, this one had lots of great ideas. It is well written and easily understandable. I like it because it is full of practical advice and not a lot of "Rah-rah! You can do it!!" sort of platitudes. McLaurie's approach is friendly and wise, without being casual. I think people will benefit from this book if they take the time to follow the author's instruction.

About the Author
Nick Lomb was Curator of Astronomy at the Sydney Observatory for over thirty years (1979-2010). He continues to work as a consultant astronomer for the Sydney Powerhouse Museum and Sydney Observatory. He is the author of the Australian Sky Guide, published annually by the Powerhouse Museum, as well several books on astronomy including Astronomy for the Southern Sky (1986) and the catalogue produced for the Powerhouse Museum’s exhibition on the 2004 transit of Venus, Transitof Venus: The Scientific Event that Led Captain Cook to Australia (2004).

A Great Reference Tool

This book can easily be called "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Transits of Venus." The author, Nick Lomb, did a fantastic job of documenting Venus transits throughout history and he provides a plethora of facts, photos, artistic renderings, and tidbits that keep you turning the pages and wanting to read more. It is obvious to me that he loves the subjects he writes about. You should also know that on June 5/6 of this year there will be another Venus Transit. This one is extremely important because it will be the last Venus transit to occur during our lifetime! If you miss this one, you will not have another chance. The next Venus transit across the face of the sun occurs in 2117, over 100 years from now! Buy this book for reference and be ready to truly enjoy a once in a lifetime celestial event.

This book was written as a preparation for the last transit of Venus to be visible from Earth during the twenty first century and it took place on 6th June, 2012 (the reviewer's birthday). Australia was one place on earth where the full transit was visible, which may account for the great public interest that was aroused here. One does not have to be an astronomer to have found this a historically significant and fascinating event. This book tells the story of people from many nations who have tried to observe the transit of Venus, some successfully and some unsuccessfully. The format of the book is almost square with sides of about 23 centimetres. The illustration is prolific with both black and white and colour photographs and sketches. The large size format allows plenty of room for this purpose and many of the photographs used are important historically. The book has 227 pages that include an index, a glossary and a bibliography. The front cover shows a dramatic picture of the transit of Venus with the relative size of Venus being greatly exaggerated compared to the sun. There are two sets of text; firstly there is a continuous story in a larger font and this is interrupted by the many photos and the text explaining these photos in a smaller font. The net result is to lose continuity, though it is a difficult problem to solve.

The first transit of Venus was observed by Jeremiah Horrocks in England on 6th December 1639 and he wrote an account of his observations. He had advised his friend, William Crabtree of the event and they were the first men to observe a transit of Venus as far as is known. Each successive transit was observed until the present day and Lomb describes the attempts to observe it. He produces a very interesting story of human, patience, endurance and courage. Even though few human beings alive today are likely to see the next transit in 2117, the book is well worth reading from cover as it is full of fascinating information. The book is thoroughly recommended.

A fascinating story

This book tells a fascinating tale of Venus transiting, or moving across the face of, the sun, from 1631 when this event was first predicted to the then-imminent June 2012 transit. The transits became predictable in 17th Century, when scientists began to understand orbital mechanics. Observance of the transit was determined to be be a method for determining the true distance of Earth from the sun but transits only occur in pairs at about 120-year intervals. The effort to capture data during the 18th and 19th Century events make for fascinating reading, involving hardship, adventure and ingenuity. This book has LOTS of excellent photos of the instruments used and the people involved as well as some good maps. Well worth getting!
