Great translation and a great work of thinking, discipline your mind by Descartes theory of the living animal man
By J.F. Carroll
Hi, I want to write a review of this real quick because I just finished it and I think it would be interesting to come back and see what I thought if I better understand this some day. What can I say? This is Descartes Meditations, and this is really sensational philosophical writing. People say this is the beginning of Western philosophy and far be it from me to question that.

This was published in 1641, this is old. I wanted an introduction to reading whole books of philosophy after being briefly introed to the genre of thought in a college intro class (mostly it was about abortion and pollution, maybe nature). The first two meditations are an excellent such intro. Descartes shocks you with a real cornerstone of philosophy, I think therefore I am. Stupendous. He mentions he needs one solid foundation on which o move the world and this is it.

Pretty much it's all working fine, relatively true, until we get to the third meditation--and what a doozy! By far the hardest part of the book, the most difficult to read outside the last half of the sixth meditation, the third focuses strictly on proving the existence of God. If I'm to be honest, this is why I bought the book. Well, Rene comes up short, very short. Of course if you were to consider this theologically, the great perfection of God would not be understandable through the science of thought that is philosophy, because as a being he is so grand and BEYOND our understanding. But Descartes tries anyway.

If you think about it as a mild mannered regular Joe, Descartes just simply fails to put any proofs positive on the table. He gets closer in the fifth meditation, about His existence. Existence is precluded in perfection. But the arguments in the third, such as since he thinks God exists, he must therefore exist, because he is a thinking thing, and thinking is existing, and thinking through intellect and understanding is reality, is not quite so great. Or there is his theory that since he is finite, limitable human existence, the idea of his unperfection must strictly follow from an example of the divine and perfect, a being whose example is great enough to cast the shadow of his imperfect existence.

Basically, when Descartes begins to talk about God, his argument goes underwater. I distinctly feel that his faith comes from reading of the scriptures, and not from his polymath philosophy, which is fine. You're not going to find faith in Descartes' Meditation on First Philosophy, you'll have to stick with the King James Bible for that.

Everything else here, though, is fascinating, and it was ballsy just to attempt to define faith for all atheists in one piece of philosophy. The divine is best left for the divine, I think. His theories about mind and body, and truth and falsity, such that the will is second to nature (my own thing), or rather that the will is subservient to the divine, or rather that the will is incorrigible (I need to read this again) are brilliant. You have Descartes whole world view and I think, besides some middle ages thinking (the foot's feeling is fooled by indiscriminate other sensors, wha?), it'll closely align with yours and mine.

This is obviously a masterpiece of philosophy, and was quite an intro. The Cogito Ergo Sum thing is very essential and it will make perfect sense to anyone here, who is either just getting into philosophy or attempting to discipline their mind.

I really need to read this twice, but my brain is tired so I'll leave it alone for now. I imagine that this is one of those texts philosophy teachers love to come back to.

4 stars for the Descartes work, but a perfect 5 for this edition
By David T.
I've read two editions of the Meditations now, first this one and later the Hackett version from Cress. Overall while both were adequate and understandable, this was overall superior. It contains a great translation, an excellent 50ish page introduction, numerous footnotes (including many instances where the french version differed from the Latin one) and then about 60 pages from the Objections and Replies (while I've not read all of the Objections, for a non-philosopher such as myself this selection was good and probably all I needed).

Meditations further explains Descartes's ideas first explained in his Discourse on Method. He rejects everything he was taught and arrives at the fact that he exists, god exists, finally that other things exist and that the body is separate from the soul. It seems his god argument in this one slightly expands to a slightly different argument, namely that something can not come out of nothing and since imperfect things can only come from something more perfect than themselves, if you go up the line of perfection the most perfect thing or God. I guess to me all of these years later, I don't see how this proves god. Secondly I'm curious if the idea of god is natural, meaning if someone was born and never hear the idea of god mentioned would he arrive at the same conclusions of a perfect being or was Descartes influenced by his opinions found from a lifetime of learning from "the great book of the world". For the material things he realizes that for god to be perfect he wouldn't deceive him by making everything around him an illusion, therefore since God is not a deceiver, matter is real. My initial thought is that if an insane person perceives things as existing which do not, then they're not real and therefore would god then become a deceiver using this reasoning? Anyways regardless of one agrees with Descartes, these works are pretty interesting and for their importance to philosophy alone they are essential reads.

methodological precision for readers of biblical narrative
By David A. Baer
This book is meant to teach people to 'read with understanding'. It accomplishes its objective by inviting its reader to go back over the same biblical narratives numerous times, viewing the text through a different lens on each visit. One is trained to seek out each story's hero, a concept that is linked to the notion of quest (the effort to solve a problem). Fokkelman believes that the distance separating us from the biblical stories is not to be feared, since a well-written story will 'come into its own' when it meets an attentive reader. The book places the concepts and nomenclature of narratology in the hands of the Bible reader, whose subjectivity is not to be lamented. Rather, it is the sphere in which he encounters the text's art. Meaning is conferred in the interplay of the reader who bestows it and the text which in some sense 'has' it.

A skilful narrator uses both 'narrative' and 'narrated' time. That narrator is a pose, an attitude, omniscient and anonymous, indeed a veritable ringmaster, a master over characters whose truth may or may not be that of the narrator himself, a puppeteer manipulating his characters and his readers 'who hardly knows when to stop'. In this narratalogical world, even God is a character who answers to the narrator's sovereign whim. It is our responsibility to ferret out the storyteller's ideology by means of the way he intervenes in his stories to provide information and description.

Fokkelman returns time and again to the genius of a good narrator, who by selecting elements of action and passion constructs a plot that enables us to detect its hero and that hero's quest. The way he structures a narrative-astutely employing time and space, entrances and exits-allows him to conceal his values where the well-trained (and structuralist?) reader will find the treasure. The narrator himself is a veteran of 'extensive training' in exploiting multiple forms of repetition, with their varying degrees of similarity and contrast.

The narrator also controls the flow of knowledge, manipulating the points of view his characters are permitted to disclose and thus shaping the menu of perspectives which his readers might choose to assume. Usually he is stingy with his own viewpoint and values, which may or may not match those of God, as the narrator perceives them. The narrator's work may be complemented at the level of act, cycle, and longer prose compositions by that of one or more editors, though Fokkelman appears to treat both of these literary actors under the rubric of the narrator. Certainly, the editor-also anonymous-is every bit as intentional about his purpose as the narrator, a feature which allows us to enjoy good books as well as good stories.

Fokkelman dedicates one chapter to exploring the 'collaboration' of prose and poetry, a topic which hints at his subsequent Reading Biblical Poetry. After establishing what differentiates the two forms of discourse, Fokkelman alleges that the hybrid style of the biblical writer 'relativizes, or even mocks and annihilates the distinction'. A penultimate chapter extends the 'main questions of narratology' to the New Testament's synoptic gospels. A final chapter offers helpfully suggestive questions for a reader to ask of is text, together with suggestions for further study.

Though this book is not the kind of easy read that its title might suggest, it is a worthwhile and occasionally unsettling book for the biblical critic. In the course of his descriptions, Fokkelman treats us to various masterful readings (for example, of the Gideon story, pp. 126-130). He underscores his fascination with the biblical narrator and his negative views regarding historical-critical praxis, convictions that do not escape a certain irony. For example, after rather severely limiting the space in which the text's and writer's intention may be taken into account, Fokkelman ascribes to the narrator a far more sophisticated intentionality than even those scholars whom he critiques normally allow. As for the reader, Fokkelman uses morally-charged language to refer to that person's labour (for example, his 'duty', p. 117; the need to 'perform our task correctly', p. 146; the counsel, 'Do not be tempted to speculate on "how it really was," there and then, so far away and so long ago, in that utterly alien culture', p. 207) Indeed, his chapter on the New Testament ends with the rhetorical question, 'What exactly is the difference between disciple and reader?'

There is no doubt but that the biblical narrator is the hero of Fokkelman's story. Careful reading of this book will provide fresh insight into that person's craft, quest, and product.

A literary approach to the Bible
By A Customer
Fokkelman believes that reading is the action of conferring meaning to a text, is only realised through the mediation of the reader and scarcely taken into account by those who seek to interpret texts as coming from a different place, in a different day and a different culture. He thinks the biblical texts deserve better. Tell them to a good listener and they will quickly come into their own. So subjectivity is `in' and what follows is a training manual for readers with no knowledge of the original languages.
After applying his principles to selection of biblical stories he suggests a further hundred on which the reader can exercise his imagination, together with ten productive questions and suggestions for further reading.
The gap between Fokkelman's theory and execution will present no problems to the literary professionals but may prove a handicap to those less skilled, while the emphasis on hero, plot and winners, though helpful to beginners, may stifle more imaginative and creative approaches in others, and it is sometimes easier to see the value of his challenge to the traditional interpretations than to appreciate what is added by his alternatives. A better translation and more careful editing would have helped

From Publishers Weekly
In what could be one of the most provocative music books published this year, two innovators in music technology take a fascinating look at the impact of the digital revolution on the music business and predict "a future in which music will be like water: ubiquitous and free-flowing." Kusek and Leonhard foresee the disappearance of CDs and record stores as we know them in the next decade; consumers will have access to more products than ever, though, through a vast range of digital radio channels, person-to-person Internet file sharing and a host of subscription services. The authors are especially good at describing how the way current record companies operate - as both owners and distributors of music, with artists making less than executives - will also drastically change: individual CD sales, for example, will be replaced by "a very potent 'liquid' pricing system that incorporates subscriptions, bundles of various media types, multi-access deals, and added-value services." While the authors often shift from analysts into cheerleaders for the ber-wired future they predict - "Let's replace inefficient content-protection schemes with effective means of sharing-control and superdistribution!" - their clearly written and groundbreaking book is the first major statement of what may be "the new digital reality" of the music business in the future. Alright already!
By Lance Brown
This is a case of a lot of filler to make what could be communicated in a short essay into a book. The basic message "The music industry has to embrace digital technology." This and a few other salient points are made early in the book and then repeated with different wording ad nauseum. I would suggest standing in the store, reading the introductory stuff and skimming the rest. Too many authors are doing this these days. It should have been a magazine article.

Future Of Music
By Anna Omak
I would reccommend this book to anyone who is thinking of going into the industry. Speaking from a vocalist's perspective, alot of the time we forget the other important aspects of the ever changing music industry in our effors to remain artistic and undiluted, forgetting that they all work hand in hand. This book I feel has enlightened me with sound judgement and speculation. It has also inspired me to formulate a strategy on how i plan to fit in. I now feel as though I have valuable and priceless knowledge on every aspect of that which i love and desire to suceed in-

Music.

Indispensible
By Stephen Hill
A stunningly candid source of concentrated, up to date insight about the music business and its turbulent transition into the digital era. This book tells it straight and will make the dinosaurs of the music industry very unhappy.

Like Martin Luther's '95 Theses' nailed to the door of Wittenberg Cathedral, Kusek and Leonard drive nail after nail into the sclerotic heart of the old-fashioned music business. Their rational vision of the future of music rests on the idea of unshackling music from the hardcopy product business in a yet-to-be-realized era of open content licensing, facilitating sharing and communication among users, and growing the business to its full potential.

It provides as clear a vision of the future of the music industry as you will find, from two writers with a rare combination: a solid grounding in the traditional practices of the music business, an up-to-the-minute knowledge of the new technologies that are changing it, and the ability to think through the consequences.

I've dreamed about a book like this, but thought it would be impossible in today's hyperdynamic environment where every week seems to bring a breakthrough technology, device, or service. But by digging out the underlying trends and principles Kusek and Leonard get under the news and illuminate it. Along the way they provide a brilliantly concise history of the evolution of digital media.

I can't think of any book more important for artists to get the full re-orientation they need to survive and prosper in the digital era. It's no less critical for members of the music and broadcasting industries who need to consolidate their thinking into a coherent roadmap for the future.

In a word: indispensible.
