About the Author
Don Powers grew up in a large family of 6 boys on a Dairy Farm in northern Illinois. He left home at 17 to join the Marines and serve as a Marine Infantryman. After returning home to Illinois he became a Police Officer. He has been an Officer for 15 years. The first Police Department Mr. Powers worked at as a Patrol Officer and later as a team member for the Departments Emergency Response Team. He was assigned a Narcotic Agent for a joint Narcotics Team that was run by the Illinois State Police, and worked as an Undercover Narcotics Agent. He has been involved in strength sports and wrestling since childhood. He has competed in Powerlifting, Strongman contests, Arm Wrestling, Toughman and Submission Wrestling as an Adult. He is a Certified Catch Wrestler with Scientific Wrestling and a Bronze level coach for USA Wrestling. He lives in Northwest Illinois with his wife of 17 years, Amy, and his two children, Rene and Shawn. Mr. Powers still works' as a Police Officer at a small department giving him more time to devote to his family and other passions.

Great book, easy to follow

Great book! it is well written in an easy to follow style. Don takes you step by step through the different moves. The added photos showing each step is a great help. As a police officer with over 20 yrs on the job I have been through many arrest & control type classes. Most were Okay, but took many hours of practice to maintain the skills to do the moves in real life situations. Don teaches a system based on simple moves that are easy to learn and, more important, easy to remember when your day is going very badly all of a sudden. Every officer knows you loose fine motor skills while under pressure, such as fighting for your life. That is why the complex control moves taught to most police officers at the academy have little real world use. That is also why many officer - suspect encounters turn into a fist fight, because the average officer can not remember these complex control/arrest moves under that type of stress. And the average officer is who this book was written for. Using the "catch" holds Don teaches, one can gain control of a suspect/attacker very quickly , and hold that control until backup arrives, without much thought. Again, a great book and well worth the small investment. An investment that just may save your life one dark night!

Recommend for education

The information and instruction in this book is clear and precise. I ordered the book to show moral support to a friend and found that it would be very helpful to me personally with exercises and techniques that would be beneficial as strength training and self defense. Also enjoyed the humor and personalization throughout the book. Well Done!

A different take on control tactics

Let me start by saying that if you think you are going to "learn" control tactics from a book, then the error is with YOU, not the author. Learning self defense and control tactics takes real-life practice. A book can be a handy guide, but it can only take a person so far.

That being said, I actually liked the author's attempt at introducing a better way to subdue hostile suspects. Too much of what is currently being sold to police departments as "control tactics" is ineffective, overly complex, or both. Additionally, very little of what is taught takes place from the FRONT of the suspect, which is where we are normally standing when the fight starts. So....I actually liked the fact that this particular set of techniques starts from the face-to-face position.

I also liked the fact that the techniques shown were reasonably easy to work, appear to be "high percentage" moves with a reasonably high success rate, and consistently led into the same handcuffing technique. This is a key to any good program, as every move should at least TRY to get the officer back to the same handcuffing position. I felt that the author did a good job of this, and the techniques had a good flow to them. Additionally, the book was reasonably well illustrated, which anyone with a desire to learn from a book will certainly appreciate.

So...were there any negatives to the book? Well...yes...a couple. Firstly, the book could have stood some professional editing. Spelling and grammar still matter to people, and even minor errors like the ones found in this book can detract from the overall effect, making what could have been a GREAT book into just a good one. Please, future self-publishers....have someone else look at your book before you publish it. Preferably someone with an ability to edit.

Secondly, while I realize the author was trying to come across as witty and "street-wise" with his humor, his attempts at including his target audience (police) with inside jokes and "cop" humor will come across as unprofessional at best to civilians. If the book was being marketed exclusivley to police, then fine....joke away. If you are going to sell to everyone else in the free world though, the cop humor needs to be eliminated.

Overall, however, I thought this book was a good addition to any police officer's library, and certainly worth more than just a casual look by anyone who wants to add new tools to their control tactics toolbox. I would even go so far as to recommend that the author consider a producing a companion video, to illustrate his methods in live form. While not a great book, I do feel that this was worth the money spent.

Craig Deegan, BCom (UNSW), MCom (Hons)(UNSW), PhD (UQ), FCA is Professor of Accounting and Director of Research in the School of Accounting and Law at RMIT University in Melbourne. Best introduction to the field

Mead, Roger. 1988. The design of experiments: statistical principles for practical applications. Cambridge University Press, New York. xiv + 620 p. $130.00, ISBN: 0521-24512-5.

The news that Professor Mead had written a book on experimental design was exhilarating. There has long been a great need for a thorough, up-to-date, concept-focused textbook appropriate for teaching experimental design. Anyone familiar with Mead's incisive criticism of the neglect of experimental design in one of biologists' more revered statistics books (see Biometrics 38:863-864, 1982) or with his own unusually lucid introductory statistics textbook (Mead, R., and R. Curnow. 1983. Statistical methods in agriculture and experimental biology, Chapman and Hall) will anticipate with pleasure reading his attempt to fill this lacuna.

The book is simply superlative. It is a worthy successor to R. A. Fisher's The design of experiments and D. R. Cox's Planning of experiments and seems likely to be the contemporary classic in its field. It does not, in my opinion, have a close competitor.

The book is strongly focused on concepts and principles. These are presented with clarity, balance, and thoroughness. It is a book on design, not design and analysis, and its success derives in part from its intentionally reduced attention to statistical analysis. Experimental design cannot easily be discussed very deeply, however, without some reference to statistical analysis, and the author gives us just the right amount of it. This includes a 42-page chapter on "General principles of linear models for the analysis of experimental data."

Mead's discussions of statistical matters contain clear-headed advice on several topics that elsewhere are generally treated with much myopia, cant, and carelessness. These include log transformations, multiple comparison tests, and analysis of repeated measures experiments. Among Mead's comments on these topics are: "It should be assumed that data for continuous variables should be transformed to a log scale unless there is good reason to believe that this is unnecessary"; "I recommend ... that multiple comparison methods be avoided; that the idea of experiment-wise error rates be retained, but only as a general principle"; and "[for repeated measures designs] analyses may usefully be performed for each measurement time, [since the purpose is] to discover the important patterns of treatment variation or lack of variation so that a sensible overall interpretation can be achieved."

"What!", you say, "Above item number 1/2/3 is contrary to the advice I was given on my examination/thesis/manuscript last month by a colleague/professor/editor/anonymous reviewer! And it conflicts with much of what I see published in top journals such as E______y!"

Mead's comments on these topics are not as extensive as one would like. But in an understated way he helps bring out an important truth. The application of statistics in biology disconcertingly often reflects the interaction of blind sheep and half-sighted shepherds.

The design topics covered are fairly standard. The clarity and thoroughness of the book, not novelty of subject matter, are its greatest virtue. Nevertheless, there is much original material.

In a thought-provoking chapter on "Computers for analyzing experimental data," Mead discusses the nature and problems of canned programs, cites the need for development of "an interactive, user-friendly, statistically valid and comprehensive general package," and calls for "a complete reappraisal of the principles of experimental design without the restraints imposed by the limits of computational practice" which existed in the past.

In his chapter on "Replication," he devotes several pages to pseudoreplication (though without using that term), notes its frequency in the literature and shows, with examples, various ways in which it can come about. No other book on design does this so well. He does, however, slip into some terminology that, though common, is misleading. Multiple measurements made on a single experimental unit are implied to represent "false," not "useful," or not "proper" replication (pp. 111-113), or, in the equally inappropriate language of others, "pseudoreplicates." Such language is a confusing way to make the point that replicate measurements on a single unit cannot be treated as if they came from separate units. If statistical improprieties occur, they should be attributed to the analyst, not the measurement. Save the cuss words for the former!

The mere fact that the book has a chapter dedicated to "Replication" is itself revolutionary. The topic is so fundamental that one might expect every textbook on experimental design to have such a chapter. Yet of 12 other such books on my shelf not a single one does. Mead's chapters titled "Elementary ideas of treatment structure," "Blocking," and "Randomization" likewise reflect his unusual ability to see, and help the reader to see, the forest despite the trees.

The concepts of response design and the evaluation unit, both fairly new to experimental design (e.g., S. Urquhart. 1981. HortScience 16:621-627) and not presented by Mead, would have helped explicate some key ideas. Both the concepts and the terms are of considerable pedagogic value, and could have kept Mead from wrongly implying that, for example, unless successive repeated measurements are taken on exactly the same evaluation units, they cannotbe considered to have been "taken on exactly the same experimental units" (p. 408).

In his preface Mead states: "Understanding the fundamental concepts of design is essential for all research scientists involved in programmes of experimental work." Most scientists will find the statement unexceptional but also acknowledge that they themselves never had a course, or at least a good one, on the subject. What they did and didn't learn from "on-the-job training" and faculty advisors, however, is now sadly clear in the scientific literature. Lack of an excellent text on experimental design has always been one excuse. We no longer have it. Dismiss your old gurus and come walk with Pastor Binocularis.

Because this is the very best book on experimental design that has ever been written, it is unfortunate, though possibly appropriate, that it is also the most expensive. Regardless, the pit will rarely if ever be ordered in quantity as a course textbook, and sales will be one to two orders of magnitude lower than they might have been with a reasonable price. The rapid exhaustion of the first printing further supports the miscalculation hypothesis. A second printing, and a paperback edition, are promised.

About the Author
Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2014 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTAL FUNCTIONS, the 2013 Text and Academic Authors Association Award for CALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). Dr. Larson authors numerous textbooks including the bestselling Calculus series published by Cengage.

Dr. Bruce H. Edwards is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Florida. Professor Edwards received his B.S. in Mathematics from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Dartmouth College. He taught mathematics at a university near Bogotá, Colombia, as a Peace Corps volunteer. Great book and don't complain about the price because it is worth it!

This book is well worth the price. It is rich in explanations and exercises. It does a good job of giving plenty of application examples. Some argue that textbooks like this are too expensive, but this book is worth every penny and more. It is professional and comprehensive. I had my friend, who was an engineering professor at a major university and tends to be critical, look at it. He said that if I covered everything in this book I would have very close to the same level of knowledge as a college math major. I love the book because it is easy to understand the examples and explanations and the exercises are thorough and challenging. I also subscribe to Great Courses Plus on my roku and am watching the three Calculus courses taught by Professor Bruce Edwards. This book is an ideal accompaniment to these courses.

Failing student gets a B, soley due to this book.

So here was my predicament before I bought this book: I am having to self teach Calc 2 the instructor sucks & our book is even worse constantly skipping 5-6 step in the process so it take you hrs just to figure out the examples given in the book (let alone homework time). I work full time in a mentally intensive job so generally speaking my brain is done by the time I get home so trying to figure out missing steps was at the very least aggravating & an the most made me wanna take a gun to my assigned book (Essential Calc By Stewart's). After receiving a 95% (take home), 60% & 68% on my tests i knew I needed help when we started sequence & series section & I spent 2 Hrs trying to figure these things out to no avail.

So I went on Amazon & did some searching. This book by Larson had the best reviews (& I had a fellow student who used a previous addition & said it was an excellent book) & I was desperate to get a B or better in this class (A requirement for work to pay my tuition). So what's an extra $124 for a new book if it gets me $2500 in tuition in the end. So I bit the bullet & bought this one. I got a 79% on the next test through self teaching. Nough said, this book is great & the resources the book provides are excellent as well (& you do not pay extra for them, they are free for anyone to use).

Comprehensive

Comprehensive. Proofs offered in book and on website. Answers to odd exercises provided on website. This is the third time in my life that I have attempted to learn calculus. The first time when I was 26, I used Gilbert Strang's book to teach myself. The second time, when I was 30, I took a calculus coarse at a local 4-year college. The first time I made it to limits. The second time I made it to integration. In both cases I quit because I got bogged down trying to find proofs. I'm 45 now and this book makes it much easier to understand. And, if I can't find an adequate explanation in the book I can go to Khan Academy web site to clear up things, which wasn't available 10 years ago. I think that I will make it all the way to vector analysis this time.

About the Author
Cory Booker is the junior United States senator from New Jersey. He was born in Washington, D.C., and his parents, who both worked for IBM, later relocated the family to Harrington Park, New Jersey. A star high school athlete, Booker received a football scholarship to Stanford University, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar before earning his law degree from Yale University. Booker won a special election to fill the term of the late Senator Frank Lautenberg to become New Jersey’s first African American senator and only the twenty-first person in American history to ascend directly from mayor to senator. Booker lives in Newark’s Central Ward.

Powerful but missing a piece...

Booker does a fantastic job of connecting anecdotal moments from his time on city council and as mayor to give life to infuriating realities that Michelle Alexander conveys in her work, The New Jim Crow; furthermore, he connects to themes that promote reforms within the criminal justice system that Bryan Stevenson has dedicated his life’s work to rectify.

There is a refreshing theme of humility throughout this book that was not always evident in Booker’s “larger than life” presence when he was first elected as mayor. Despite “having more degrees than the month of July”, Booker acknowledges a difference between schooling and education since many of his most revered mentors throughout his post-academia journey lacked the prestige tied to so much of the education portion of his resume. Booker’s recognition of the prevalent “poverty of empathy” is powerful, his connections to Gandhi and Martin L. King are uplifting; however, there are moments of hopeless that he conveys without resolve - clearly, he has much work ahead of him.

Though I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, I was really disappointed that there was no mention of lessons learned from successes and failures of education reform - specifically the $100 million from Facebook. This was such a highly publicized segment of his mayoral tenure before he took the vacant senate seat. As an educator, it made me think that the political tensions around this topic could not plausibly be "United".

Regardless, I hope Senator Booker continues to write because his prose is passionate. It made me believe that he does have the power to uplift the masses to unite through an "interdependence" that he beautifully conveys through both personal anecdotes and parables.

A great read

I listened to the audiobook version, which is narrated by the author. Booker's purpose for the book was to help the reader understand his own personal mission in the government and how he hopes to help better the lives of Americans. He illustrates his family's journey through segregation and the combination of hard work, kindness, and luck that helped to get his family (and him) to where he is today. He discusses his own work in Newark and the various people who influenced him. He avoids name-dropping his celebrity friends and instead highlights the people who were on the ground doing the work when he came along to offer his help and his vision.

I appreciated the fact that Booker highlights many of the mistakes he made during the journey from Rhodes Scholar and Yale Law School graduate to Newark mayor and later U.S. Senator. Not only did he make mistakes in his approach and vision as to what he could accomplish when he first moved into Newark, but talks about mistakes that led to significant consequences. He perspective on helping alleviate poverty and racial division is inspiring and it is obvious that he is still the optimist, despite nearly twenty years of public service.

The only criticisms I have are that 1) he can be a little repetitive with facts/data/sayings through the book and 2) that he did not provide a list of sources for the data he cited in the book. I know on a recent interview someone mentioned that and he said they have the information but decided not to put it in the book because it can be easily recalled online, but citations would have been preferred for me.

This is really an extraordinary book. I recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired in their daily lives or to solve bigger problems in work, family or society. I recommend it to anyone who wants to feel uplifted. The vivid stories make me think about my own ancestry and heritage, my connections with my own parents and children, and with my neighborly community and the wider community beyond my small town.

In the first chapter, Cory tells about his wise and sharp-witted parents and grandparents (and ancestry behind that, and the dramatic story of learning about them), and how his family came through incredible circumstances to live in a white suburb in the early '70s. The next chapter is vivid detail of Cory's moving into a housing project and the mix of people - all of whom make up a powerful and humane narrative that applies to cities all over America. Each chapter is an incredible new experience.

The book is focusing me on my connections -- which I'm more inspired to call brotherhood/sisterhood -- including with people I don't yet know, but with whom I want to take more time to know. During the few days I read the book, I jumped out of bed in the morning to hear what's next, and because I felt more positive and inspired that day, with the greater feeling of power and optimism to improve my own kids' lives that very day. Cory's stories and attitudes ring so true, so vivid. After reading the book, I was inspired to get the book on my iPhone to listen to in the car, something I highly recommend because he reads it with both the heart and charisma that he developed, through his own hard work and the network of friendships and love that exist in his life. There's a lot of everything for everyone in this book!

It would be very sad indeed if only politically-minded people read United, and even sadder if only, say, urban Democrats read it. It's a book for everyone, the general public. It's just a great, great book! It lives up to its title. We are all united, and in ways that we're not, we should strive to be. The book inspires me to move toward that in my internal, family and outward life.

It argues that individuals become a group not in so far as they develop personal relationships based on the mutual satisfaction of their needs, but by developing a shared social categorization of themselves in contrast to others, a shared perception of "us" in contrast to "them". The text summarizes classic psychological theories of the group, describes and explains the important effects of group membership on social behaviour, outlines self-categorization theory in full and shows how the general perspective has been applied in research on group formation and cohesion, social influence, the polarization of social attitudes, crowd psychology and social stereotyping.
