If the speed at which I read this counts for anything...

I haven't read too many romance paranormal books, so I don't have a lot to compare to, but if the speed at which I read this counts for anything...
I started when I crawled into bed, and read till my eyes could no longer stay open. I resumed and finished reading when my husband's alarm went off and he got up to shower. As I said, this is a new genre for me, but it caught my attention and held on tight the whole ride. Well-written, fun, exciting, and just the right amount of steam (I get bored with too many copy and paste love scenes and I usually start skipping pages--not this one though). I hope to read more about the Therian agents.

Ninety minutes after purchasing this book, I had it read. I even took it with me to the kitchen while I fixed dinner!
Agent Chase Payne is a lion shapeshifter, and works for the Therian Council to keep their world from being exposed to humans. Jacob Oliver is Chase's best friend and boss. Chase swore to never mate and put himself through the pain his father suffered when his mother died. But when he sees how Lora Oliver has grown up into a gorgeous woman, he has to struggle to remember she's his best friend's little sister..
Lora Oliver trained to be a Therian agent without her brother's knowledge. He finds out after she's been accepted with the agency, and places her on Chase's team. Lora has believed Chase is her mate since she was nine or ten years old. Now at 22 years old, she's determined to be strong and hold her feelings in. Only she wasn't prepared for the pull towards Chase to be even stronger now. After she caves and kisses Chase, he realizes she's his true mate. He fights to deny the pull while they go out on dangerous missions, and all he can think about is sex with her, or protecting her.
It's intense, it's hot and steamy, it's heartbreaking here and there. It's a must read. I can't wait to read Turning Payne.

I loved this shifter love story. It brought into play different facts around the myths of the shifter world. It showed some ideas that were unusual. Lara had loved Chase since she was ten and knew he was supposed to be her mate. He didn't want a mate because he saw how his Dad had suffered when his Mom died. Their connection was so strong they couldn't stay away from each other.

Useful, but with a STEEP learning curve

I have taught electromagnetism at the advanced graduate level, and am reasonably familiar with classical differential geometry and general relativity (e.g. as presented by Weinberg). I am finding Ludvigsen's book a tough read, though a worthwhile one. A considerable amount both of the physics background and the mathematics background of the subject is omitted or treated very briefly. Three paragraphs cover the Coulomb potential *and* the plane wave, for instance. Definitions tend to be ostentive - by example.
Ludvigsen's book has the virtues of brevity as well as its difficulties, however: the reader can see where he is going at all times, and the author takes the reader through the modern approach to differential geometry, and deeply into the results of relativity theory, quickly and efficiently.
I hope to see a second edition of this book. A little more explanantion, here and there, would do much, if not to reduce the steepness of the learning curve, at least to provide a few handholds on the way up!

There are endorsements on the back of this from Roger Penrose and Bernhard Schutz. The two neatly parenthesise the problem with this book, which is that in order to follow it, you need first to read Schutz's 'Geometrical methods', but once you have read Schulz you can skip Ludwigsen, and have a crack at Penrose (or, more reasonably, Wald) instead.
This should be a nice book (and Roger's blurb is probably earned - but Rog is not the audience). The author is enchanted - understandably - by the beauty of both relativity and differential geometry, but he tries to do too much in the number of pages he has, forgetting that mathematical ladders are much less intimidating looking down than looking up.

A book twice as long would take half the time to read.

A good book (in particular, for students)

This is a good book, with a pronounced mathematical accent and many useful and solvable problems. It can be considered as a textbook, though there are some points which deserve corrections, for example: (a) In p. 36, the Author characterized the Lorentz transformation too shortly, and he calls it "Lorenz transformation". This is especially strange since in the neighbouring Denmark (Ludvigsen's address in the book is in Sweden) there was a great physicist L.V. Lorenz, 1829-1891, inventor of the Lorenz condition, creator of the electromagnetic theory of light (1867, independently of Maxwell), and co-author of the famous Lorenz-Lorentz formula -- together with H.A. Lorentz of Holland to whom pertains the above transformation. Eight lines below Ludvigsen introduces "Levi-Cevita" tensor (named after T. Levi-Civita, and this is a pseudo-tensor = axial tensor). These errors are not misprints (see Index, p. 216, and the text in the pages given there). (b) The Author uses, of course, real coordinates (not the ancient imaginary time), so it is inadequate to picture the Lorentz transformation as a sheer trigonometric rotation of space-time axes (cf. figs. 4.7, 5.3). (c) In the very title of the book the subtitle ("A Geometric Approach") seems to be artificial since general relativity practically is a synonym of geometry: the well-proportioned abundance of figures in the book is not identical to geometry. Imagine that Euclid would entitle his books as "The Elements. A Geometric Approach"... But the book by Ludvigsen is definitely a success, though it needs some editing more. I highly recommend it to students.

In his massive and erudite study, trumpeter and Bix Beiderbecke biographer Sudhalter makes the case that white musicians have been unfairly overlooked in the canonical histories of jazz. Sure to stir up controversy among critics, scholars and fans of "American classical music," Sudhalter's history argues that the rise of multiculturalism, for all its positive effects on society at large, has helped foster a popular misconception of jazz as an art form dominated by African-Americans. While Sudhalter's polemical position provides structure to what otherwise might have become an unwieldy and anecdotal discussion, it creates conceptual difficulties. Sudhalter fails to establish how race worked in early 20th-century America, taking for granted that, like today, Sicilian, Jewish and Irish musicians would have been regarded as "white." On a mission to promulgate the ostensibly neglected story of white jazz innovators, Sudhalter, a trumpeter and jazz writer, offers a bouncy, well-researched account of white jazzsters from 1915 to 1945, interlaced with explanations of musical styles and a few somewhat superfluous musical notations. The author expertly recounts the trek white jazzmen took from New Orleans to Chicago and their contributions to New York hot jazz, the new generation of Chicago jazzmen, and big bands. After chapters on such giants as Bix Beiderbecke, Jack Purvis, and Bunny Berrigan, Sudhalter ends the book with sections on the bands of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and others. Throughout, the author repeatedly and unnecessarily bludgeons the reader with the point that these white jazz luminaries contributed to jazz as much as their African American counterparts, whom he mentions only peripherally. His lopsided perspective keeps an excellent book from turning into a classic. Musician and scholar Sudhalter is often contentious in this massive work, but about points of musical performance rather than the race politics he diplomatically treats in the book's introduction. He hotly disputes, say, the low rating of Jimmy Dorsey in Gunther Schuller's magisterial Swing Era (1989), but he doesn't touch the chip-on-the-shoulder argument that jazz is black music--period. All jazz fans can read him without fear of offense, even should they still disagree with him about the musicians and schools of performance that are the subjects of the book's 28 chapters. Far from offended, deep-dyed fans, whether neophytes or weighty authorities in terms of listening experience, surely will be overjoyed by the range, depth, and readability--Sudhalter is no academic drudge, but an ace writer--of his coverage. As its page count suggests, this is a virtual encyclopedia of its subject, some of whose parts (e.g., the two chapters on Artie Shaw) are long and comprehensive enough to be published as freestanding books. Fascinating, Readable, Essential, and Anti-Racist

This is a monster. It's monsterously large, monsterously interesting, and monsterously important. But like most monsters, it can easily be misunderstood. As Mr. Givens, writing just before me has so well expressed, it corrects the sophmoric notion that early jazz was a solely American Black movement.
Unfortunately, it takes a unique record collection to compliment the text as you take in the rich, marvelously written narrative. I have such a collection (both black and white jazz) and it helped emormously to refer to it every few pages. This made reading this book a multi-media tour through my own record collection as well as a reading pleasure. Too bad that CD Mr. Givens mentions was not included with the book -- I would have made the points he makes that much more accessible to people without the music to refer to.
There are many interesting aspects brought up throughout the book. For example, the fact that Sicilians were so important to early jazz, and that white and black jazz, although differing in presentation and performance, evolved together and in relation to one another are two points well and truely made by the book.
As a matter of fact the book is so authoritative that I don't think it can't be successfully critiqued by anyone who does not have years of listening under his belt. I myself went through the early jazz journey, starting with the "jazz is black" point of view when I was in college. A sophomore in fact. We now know that even blues had a white/black evolution as well as jazz. It may be that one has to start at the black is everything perspective to get to the right point of view. I consider people who casually hold that point of view as not completing that journey.
It is also important to note that the book is beautifully written by someone who commands the language as well as the most accomplished novelist.
In any case, Lost Chords is possibly the most important book on jazz written since World War II. I certainly think so.

Excellent commentary on least common side of old debate

Mr.Sudhalter has chosen to place himself in the center of the 82 year old debate over whether jazz is only a black innovation in music.

Although at first glance, many will instantly brand the book racist and anti-black, they will find (by actually reading the book) that Mr. Sudhalter is simply stating the case for jazz being both black and white, and he does so extremely well.

He cites actual events and circumstances, musical examples, and quotes from the musicians themselves, both white and black. The book relates how musicians respected and admired each other's talent, regardless of race; how the growth and development of jazz was a truly multi-cultural event in our history.

Mr. Sudhalter shows no lack of respect for anyone, except those narrow-minded jazz enthusiasts who refuse to consider the whole picture of jazz history.

'Lost Chords' just happens to cover the time frame in jazz that I really enjoy, so I was familiar with most of the musicians and music discussed. For those who aren't, I can recommend it as a way to appreciate where your choice of jazz came from, be it 50's jazz or 90's.

And by the last page, you may decide it's time to go buy some of the classic jazz in this book and decide for your yourself. (A companion CD is available, and I highly recommend it to anyone reading this book).

More than you have any right to hope for...

Not a mere antidote to political correctness in jazz criticism; Lost Chords is a prewar cultural history, a lesson in music structure, a history of woodwind instruments, a guide to innovations in guitar tuning, AND MORE. It shows the musicians as human beings with all their failings, humor, drives, hard work, and talent. I especially loved the account of the bass sax --- an instrument that looks like it could double as a moonshine still --- and its usefulness in the early days of sound recording. Sudhalter admonishes us to listen to the music and to make up your own mind. Exactly right. A good place to start is Robert Parker's Bix Beiderbecke Great Original Performances 1924-1930 (available on Amazon) If you have ever heard an early 78 rpm record, you will be astonished at Parker's sound restoration.

About the Author
Professor Wolfgang DemtrAder studied physics and mathematics, and received his PhD degree in 1961 from the University of Bonn. After working as an assistant professor and researcher at the University of Freiburg until 1967, he went as a visiting fellow to JILA in Boulder, Colorado. In 1970 he accepted a post as full professor at the newly founded University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he still works. Professor DemtrAder was awarded the Max-Born-Award of the English and German Physical Society in 1995. He is the author of about 150 scientific papers and several books.

A rare gem indeed

If you are picking up this book, you most likely have read its companion, THE GOLDEN AGE. This book continues the exploits of the children introduced in the first volume. Veddy, veddy English. Completely delightful, though.
I am not sure today's children would enjoy this book. The 19th Century British-isms will probably be quite tedious to any but the most precocious of children. And nothing really "happens" so to speak. No adventures of overwhelming magnitude. Rather, the children's imagination governs what happens throughout the book. Small things are turned into events of great importance. Children brought up with video games will most likely be bored. But for an adult, ahhh! This is a find. It will make you yearn for the idyllic childhood you never had or anybody had for that matter.
Each chapter is like sunlight shining on a bead of dew in April. Or something similarily poetic. Grahame's the better writer anyway.

Recalls the past

I'm sorry to see that Grahame's "Dream Days" is so unavailable. It's a deeply enjoyable book that demonstrates the power of "stories" to pull us out of the here and now and make us to stand up straighter, to imagine ourselves as knights and ladies. Grahame's book would be great for older children (young ones may find themselves fidgeting - there is a certain amount of description and archaic language). Adults may actually enjoy this one more than kids. Reading it brought back to me the days of my youth, when a good story could fire my imagination for days, and the characters lived right along side of me, as sort of doppelgangers. This story reminds me of E. Nesbit, another great Edwardian children's writer. Children should read these books, they are well-written and can help foster a love for the "right word" and the well-turned phrase. Try to find a copy with Parrish's illustrations. This whole book is just a wonderful aesthetic experience.

A delightful surprise

I admit it: I bought the Wordsworth paperback edition of this book for one reason -- its cover. Not being a great fan of Wind in the Willows, I was a little leary of what I'd find inside, but have discovered that Grahame's use of language and subtle depiction of character are quite delicious. This would be great for reading aloud to a bright child who enjoys words. That said, it would have to be a child with a sophisticated sense of humour: while Grahame describes everything from the viewpoint of a child's imagination, I get the feeling he's really smiling at the adults over the top of said child's head. I can't wait to read The Golden Gate, which Grahame published a few years before this book.

The first user friendly Encyclopedia!

I own dozens of Encyclopedias and this is the only one that I find user friendly. While it's not as detailed as the giant AHS books, the information is concise, consistent, and practical. Each page is dedicated to one species and is broken down by Features, Conditions, Growing Method, Flowering, After Flowering, and At a Glance which has a useful calendar outlining the planting, sowing, dividing, and flowering times. And that's only referring to the A-Z sections of the book!

Of all the books I own, this is the one I use the most.

Excellent and Frequently Used Reference

I agree with what both prior reviewers have said about this book. I own approximately twenty gardening reference books and this is the only one I have found that tells you what to do with the plant after it flowers and when to prune it. My mother, who I swear has green arms as well as thumbs, also found this book very helpful and talked me into letting her take it home with her. Fortunately, I they still had it on sale so I could replace my copy!I also like that the cover is plasticized so that I can take it out in the garden with me.

The complete garden book of flowers

I have not gotten much information from this book. It is difficult to find the flower because of the botanical names and when I page through it I still can't find the flowers I'm looking for. It is difficult to see which zone the flower is for. I was looking specifically for shade tolerant plants and I was not able to find that information for my zone. I have since purchased two other books and found one very helpful but then had difficulty finding a garden center that had them. It was almost better to find the plants with help of the experts at the centers and then research on line for information and care of those plants. It is amazing how many sites are out there.

Moominpapa writes his memoirs recalling his childhood. He escapes from an orphanage and falls in with three friends who sail away on the Oshun Oxtra to have some fantastic adventures. Moominpapa writes about saving Moominmamma from drowning and there's a happy ending where we find all Moominpapa's friends are the fathers of Moomintrolls playmates. Tove Jansson, The Exploits of Moominpappa, As Related by Himself (Ernest Benn, 1952)

The third Moomin book is, as its title advertises, the exploits of Moominpappa (it's also been released as Moominpappa's Memoirs, by the by). The frame here is that Moominpappa is reading them to Moomintroll, Sniff, and Snufkin (and the parents of those two feature prominently--which is rather odd, considering that Snufkin seems to have had nothing more than a chance meeting with Moomintroll and Sniff in Comet in Moominland, but who's counting?), who are listening with wide-eyed awe. And of course, we all know that it's all just tall tales--or is it?

Ah, wonderful Moomins, how we still adore thee after all these years. If it's been a while--or, heavens forbid, if you didn't read the series as a kid--what are you waiting for? These are great, and you'll love them as much now as you did, or would have, as a little Moomintroll. *** �

Tell me this lovely children's novel isn't out of print! If so, you must seek it out at your public library. All of Jansson's "Moomin" books are wonderful, and this one is too. Moominpappa, a round little pudgy creature, writes down the memoirs of his youth - how he was born under a lucky star, how he escaped from an orphanage, and how he met his friends and fellow oddball creatures: Hodgkins, a practical, mechanical genius; the Muddler, a worried collector of bric-a-brac; the Joxter, a lazy fellow with a no-nonsense philosophy; the Mymble's daughter, a mischievous but merry girl; and Edward the Booble, a giant something-or-other who keeps popping up when least expected. The cast of curious characters goes on in this delightful tale of a fantastic world that is also gentle and funny in a very offbeat way. Moominpappa's meandering adventures are interrupted now and again as we cut back to the present time, where the next generation listen with rapt attention to the heroic tale of its author. Sweet, subtle fun for kids around grade 4.
