About the Author

He's currently the "Chicago Sun-Times"' technology columnist.
In his pursuit of "heroically stupid applications of technology," Andy has built an animatronic Darth Vader doll that could be controlled over the Internet via telepresence to hassle his roommate's cats and written and published a complete set of plans and instructions for converting any Classic-style Macintosh into a fully functional 2.5-gallon aquarium. "The Original MacQuarium" was one of the Internet's first e-Books and can be downloaded from several sites after a quick Google search.

Dr. Jan L. Harrington has been working with and writing about the Macintosh since March 1984. In her day job, she is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of CS/IS/IT at Marist College, where she carries the torch for Macintosh users with great enthusiasm. Her 30+ published books include more than a dozen Macintosh-specific titles, including several on various flavors of the Macintosh OS.

Failed Ambition

This book attempts what is probably impossible - to provide an overview of all technology history in about 300 pages. I like the idea and wanted to see it work; however, it was not to be. The book starts with an interesting time line. The text is in general pretty readable. So what is my problem? In addition to lack of space. The author avoids explaining where she wants the text to go - what criteria are important or unimportant. This leaves us to guess at various strange omissions and inclusions. A good example of this can be found in the astronomy sections. Given 2 � pages for the history of astronomy is obviously going to be limiting. So how is the space used: 3 pictures (Galileo, VLT telescope, and Hubble space telescope) leaving about 1 � pages of text. This is broken into 9 paragraphs - 4 of which were devoted to Galileo's dispute with the Pope, one (long) of which was spent beating up on the flat earth society. Is this a good use of limited space? Then take this sentence - "Refracting telescopes, those based on the 17th century, remained state of the art until the 20th century, when radio telescopes were developed . . ." What happened to reflecting telescopes? This sort of omissions seems common to me and it is difficult to know if it is only a space problem or extends to the problem of trying to research all fields. The only reference to cosmological theory is to tell us that Copernicus was labeled a heretic. What about ideas like the big bang?
