Platinum-plated five star space opera Eden
By 2theD
When I first searched for Alastair Reynolds' books to read after read the Revelation Space series (Revelation Space, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap) I mistakenly typed The Perfect instead of the above title. Little did I know that when I would finally pick up the book it would turn out to be just that - perfect. I've read many SF novels of Reynolds already as well as his British compatriots' works of Iain Banks, Neal Asher, Peter F. Hamilton and Ken MacLeod. A number of those, too, I gave 5-stars but I if had the choice now I would give the those other 5-star books (with the exception of The Algebraist) a mere 5 silver stars while adorning The Prefect with 5 platinum stars. It's just THAT good.

From page 1 until page 502 (in the British edition I picked up in December 2008) the plot is wonderfully viscous which manages to slide the reader through an easy 100+ pages in one sitting and leaves you with a sense of awe at the depth and detail Reynolds serves up. When you're deep in the book you tend to let some details drift off but Reynolds will always smack them in your face just when you begin to think that he had forgotten to backtrack to include everyone and everything in the preceding pages. That simple facet of the book kept my blood pumping, as did the shiny facets of life in the Glimmer Band high above the planet of Yellowstone (part of the Revelation Space series and a key part to the novel Chasm City).

Now come to the cast involved in this menagerie of space, technology, artificial intelligence, orbital abodes, data bandwidth, police protocol and creeping evil. Dreyfus seems to be a clean-cut prefect with a dark history but still seeks justice for crimes committed along with his human deputy Thalia and hyperpig deputy Sparver. The determination and formidable pride in service displayed by these prefects is quite something to be proud of, yourself, to be involved in. Opposing this good is the necessary evil coming from Aurora and her prefect mole Gaffney. Is what they want so evil in the end? Are the means employed to satisfy this ending justified? And the ultimate question is how Dan Sylveste and Lascaille (both of Revelation Space fame) and the Clockmaker all fit into this vast, viscous plot.

superb
By Thomas D. Gulch
I can't add much to the excellent review by bluesfan with the exception that this is indeed a wonderful novel. I have been reading Alastair's books since the first revelation space novel came out some years ago and have read everything he has written. He has a gift to get the reader so emotionally involved in the novel that you start cursing outloud at the protagonist while reading the book, leading some in one's family to think they have gone daft.
I bought all of the revelation space series in hardback, and then bought them again in paperback. Along with Banks and Asher, Reynolds is writing some of the best space opera and science fiction that has ever been written.
The late Poet laureate of science fiction, the much beloved Arthur C. Clarke, has seemingly had his torch picked up by Alastair. Good going.Keep it coming.

A page turner, believe it or not!
By dennise gonzalez
An old book, with references to cassettes and Vhs, that still feels relevant and a vanguard.
The story of a family in therapy is intertwined with snippets of wisdom and the therapists' personal stories, creating the most vivid approach to hands on training that the written word can offer.
A must read for a therapist. It will make sense out of all those textbooks.

Review in Eye magazine by John Walters
By Occasional Papers
The book design complex
Reviewed by John L. Walters

The annual one-day conference at St Bride Library in Bride Lane (off Fleet Street) has become a popular fixture in London's graphic calendar, tackling themes such as magazine design and (most recently, in January 2010) music. The Form of the Book Book is a modest record and souvenir of the 2009 event.

Each talk is a chapter, and most work well on the page. There's a scholarly account of Le Corbusier as book designer, and a memoir of working with Herbert Spencer in the 1970s from Chrissie Charlton (above right). Armand Mevis's 'Every Book Starts with an Idea' is more preface than complete piece, and an interview with Bob Stein (about the future of the book) is a little opaque. The most rewarding chapters are by Richard Hollis and James Goggin.

Hollis's 'Ways of Seeing Books' begins with Gyorgy Kepes's views on the use of the book. After a brief swipe at Bruce Mau and Phaidon, he describes his manner of working with John Berger on G. before berating Penguin for their treatment of the reissue of his innovative, still radical book design for Berger's Ways of Seeing.

Goggin's 'The Matta-Clark Complex' is a good-humoured critique of the temptations that await the unwary (or over-ambitious) designer. This 'Complex' denotes the way designers create books whose form apes and competes with the content. Art books about the late Gordon Matta-Clark, known for his 'building cuts', make ideal case studies. Goggin's thoughtful conclusions demonstrate why he is one of the most interesting designers of his generation.

The Real Cost of Capital: A Business Field Guide to Better Financial Decisions, by Tim Ogier, John Rugman, Lucinda Spicer

"This book is required reading for anyone involved in the practical issues of cost of capital decisions. It is written in a way that engages the novice, and yet challenges the professional to rethink the real issues."

Brendan Scholey, Bloomberg.

The cost of capital is the fundamental financial tool for business decision-making. It drives measures of value creation and destruction, and forms the basis of financial analysis using cash flow and other frameworks. This book is here to help the business world to use the cost of capital for real.

The Real Cost of Capital describes the key issues in understanding and using the cost of capital today, taking principles from the world of managerial finance and putting them into the context of major investment decisions.

Should, for example, a company use its own cost of capital to appraise new investments and acquisitions? What cost of capital might a US company use when appraising an investment in, say, the Philippines? For a typical investment, which type of risk is more important specific risk or systematic risk? How should these risks be reflected in, say, a venture capital situation? Debt is cheaper than equity so why dont companies raise more debt than they do? Most practitioners use the weighted average cost of capital ("WACC") in valuation and appraisal but when should an alternative approach be used? This book will help you find the answers.

The Real Cost of Capital is required reading for anyone involved in the practical issues of cost of capital decisions. It brings together the latest academic thinking with practical requirements in a real-life context, and the authors have used their combined experience of advising governments and international blue-chip companies to bring readers up to date with current issues.

The Real Cost of Capital includes chapters on choosing models, calculating the cost of capital using real-life data sources, and calculating the cost of capital in an international context (a subject not usually covered in academic texts). It also has chapters and worked examples on the practical application of the cost of capital in business valuations, high-tech situations and the wide range of premia and discounts that can be applied to the cost of capital.

The book has an associated website www.costofcapital.net which contains some current links. The site also gives access to tax rate information and financial data relevant to using cost of capital around the world. The objective is to make sure that the corporate planner, student, adviser or decision maker, when she/he is on the road, can simply open the book or dial in and take advantage of a wealth of decision-making support, without the pain of extended academic study.

Excellent
By Alexander E. Maas
I am not exactly sure why this book has never been reviewed. I found it in a public library. It is superb. I am doing a cost of capital project, and I happened to have checked this book out before. I found that it summed up many things from all the finance classes I have taken, including the assumptions that are always used in finance theory. Some people just take it that these assumptions are always correct. Obviously this is not so. I will not go into detail--just buy the book. I will, and this shows how it is really a good idea for an author to send out books to public libraries. I would not have known about this otherwise, and this is the first review of Amazon--which is another good source to find out about unknown books. Sometimes you can find out things from publisher's description on Amazon, but this is all very time-consuming.

The Real Cost Of Capital
By John Samuel
I checked out this book from the library and am planning to buy my own copy. The discount rate is crucial in every capital allocation decision but most people don't fully appreciate what the number represents. This book summarizes key financial theory regarding cost of capital in very readable terms. Recommended for any corporate financial analyst.

Describes financial theory but does not reflect the real world conditions
By snezienka
If you are looking for a book that summarizes financial theory developed in the 20th century (such as CAPM etc), this book is for you. If you are however looking for a book that introdues you to the decisions made in the real world based on the way that people in the real world behave (rather than how the theories say that they should behave), you need to give this book a pass. I was looking for an introduction to the way businesses operate and make decisions based on the fast changing world around but got a book that is full of theories that do not pertain to the reality.
