About the Author
David C. Howell is a professor emeritus and former chair of the psychology department at the University of Vermont. Professor Howell's primary area of research is in statistics and experimental methods. He is also the author of STATISTICAL METHODS FOR PSYCHOLOGY, currently in an Eighth Edition (Wadsworth Cengage Learning, 2013), and the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF STATISTICS IN BEHAVIOR SCIENCE (2005) with Brian Everitt. Before retiring, he frequently served as consultant to other faculty, both in the psychology department and in departments as disparate as Geology and Animal Sciences, and brings those experiences to this endeavor. Professor Howell's other interests include computing and the World Wide Web, and how technology affects communication, teaching, and research.

My Least Favorite of Four Statistics Books

I do not care for this statistics textbook. If you are unfortunate enough to be using this book in conjunction with a professor who rambles about unrelated topics in class, you will see how poor a job the book does of equipping you to do problems on your own. (I have had one incidence of actually working a problem all the way through in lecture and am almost finished with the semester.) I have taken statistics classes in the past (two general classes, one psychology class) and maintained high grades, so I believe that the problem is not just with me. The chapters lack clear, easy to understand and follow examples worked from beginning to end. Along the same lines, the questions at the end of each chapter provide answers in the back for odd-numbered questions, BUT there are usually not multiples of the same kind of question, leaving the student without the option of working a similar problem, checking in the back of the book, and then moving on with confidence to the actual problem assigned as homework. I have spent most of the semester watching lectures on youtube to get the information I need.

An actually readable and understandable stats textbook

This is a great textbook for learning stats focused on psychology and the other behavioral sciences. This particular book has a great conceptual flow, as compared to other books that order content differently, and is actually readable! When it comes to stats, not many are looking forward to reading a book on it; most don't expect to gain anything from straight reading a book on math. Many textbooks on math subjects can be overly tedious and so complex they are difficult to read and understand as a standalone source. However, this book was so readable and understandable. As far as reading text on math, (nerd alert) this was almost story like. I would absolutely recommend this book to people who want to learn stats on their own, as well as for teaching purposes.

Well-written textbook with software emphasis

This book is well-written and uses simple language. It is written for people with very little knowledge of mathematics; very similar to Andy Field's "Discovering Statistics Using SPSS", but more serious and structured, which makes it more accessible. This books also has an emphasis on statistics software (mainly SPSS) and makes free use of screenshots. I was looking for a pure theory textbook, so I didn't finish reading it. But, in my opinion, it explains statistics better than Andy Field or Timothy Urdan's "Statistics in Plain English".

There are many books on success and Dayna Steele writes in a practical, easy to read way that drives the message home and engages you to begin the process. This is one of the best business/personal success books that you will ever read; not to mention that she goes one step beyond to engage the reader with amazing cartoon style depictions of the success tips. If you want to be successful, take on this challenge and do these 101 daily activities. It is always the easy, foundational things that we blow off thinking, how could that work? I remember Dayna Steele when I was growing up, she rocked on with KLOL and carried it over to this book. I'm going to purchased this book for my daughter who is going to be a freshman at UT. First time I've ever lost interest in a series...

I started this series after seeing a low price for book one on my kindle. The first few books weren't too bad, and I was able to look past improper grammar, poor spelling, and weak storytelling to try and see the story and setting underneath. By book 4 those thing I overlooked grated on my nerves so much that I was unable to fully enjoy the story. I continued to give the story the benefit of the doubt despite the poor writing, but between book 5 and 6 the story itself is being destroyed by deus ex machina and poor intertwining of individual story arcs.

Not a very good series at all. Only reason I am still reading it is because I have to finish the story once I start, but if you are thinking about reading this series just don't seriously just don't. The story is not very well written the characters never develop but stay locked in pre-teen idiotic decision making mode. There is so much better fantasy out there. Usually there is a far amount of repetition in fantasy books that are part of a series because you need to know the details of the world and how it works and must be reintroduced to it in each book but this series takes it to the extreme not only are the world details repeated but the characters repeat the same actions again and again. I write this hoping others will see this review while researching the series and decide not to read.

Wow. How could a story that started out so good degenerate into such muck? Morgan Rice can write! When I read the first installment I thought, wow, great premise, believable characters, finally aa awesome series to follow, which come along too seldom. But every book has gotten more and more disjointed, repetitive and, well, kind of silly. This review is not about Morgan Rice. It's about an ebook industry that is too bent on pushing out material as fast as it can whether it has any quality to it or not. Morgan, I for one would buy your full length, well written books. I think you have what it takes. But these speed writings, as well as continually worsening editing, just don't do it for me. Ready to give up on the series.

Christ in the Psalms

The pleasant feel of the pseudo-suede cover, the cream-colored paper, and the easy-to-read font make this Psalter a joy to hold and behold!

Musical notations precede each psalm as translated in the English Standard Version (ESV) of the Bible with a prayer not only to close the reading but to point to Christ.

As the Preface says, "The Old Testament Psalms" or Hebrew Scriptures "not only permit us to see Christ in them, but they also require it. Resurrection, eternity, a universal kingdom, forgiveness, even grace and blessing - each ultimately has its home and its fulfillment in Jesus Christ."

Although a Lutheran press published this book and kindly provided my review copy, the "Concordia Psalter intends to engage all Christians in singing the psalmody of the Church." Only a genuine leather cover that allows the book to lay flat might make this highly recommended book even better.

God's Songbook, Prayer Book, and Daily Devotional

I began a project at the beginning of this year that I hope I never complete. I am wanting to read more and more from the Book of Psalms. While all of the Bible is God’s Word and is profitable for teaching, instruction, correction, and training in righteousness, there is an accessibility to the Psalms that is unsurpassed.

Whether a person is reading one psalm a day or more, that book of the Bible provides lots of direction, consolation, and encouragement. On the one hand, there is the range of emotions and reactions of the psalmists, David and others. These verses range from exuberant joy in serving God to severe depression, fear, and questioning. Unlike the tendency toward the sentimental and syrupy in all too many modern songs and sentiments, the psalms are fresh, bold, manly, confrontational. They have more the feel of Aslan than a kitty cat; they are filled with roaring, not purring.

The Psalms are also a prayer book. We all fall into mindless repetition or self-centered want lists in our prayers. On the one hand, God hears our stumbling prayers and the Holy Spirit corrects our spiritually mangled grammar and syntax. On the other hand, we need to pray more Biblically. The psalms are for praying. When the enemies assailing the godly in the psalms don’t sound like the particular battles we are facing, we need to realize that quite often the psalms are prophetically describing what Jesus actually experienced. The Book of Psalms in our Bibles may be several hundred pages away from the bitter details of Christ’s sufferings and death on the cross, but the experiences of the psalms are depictions (trailers, to use the movie term) of what Jesus endured on our behalf.

The Psalms are a song book. For some churches and for many years, hymnals were Psalms recast into meter and music. We tend to have a few songs in our hymn repertoires that emerge from the Psalms, most often Psalm 23. But why do we not have 150 plus songs echoing the Psalms?

Near the end of last year, I received a copy of the Concordia Psalter from Concordia Publishing House. The picture above doesn’t do this beautiful little volume justice. Concordia is the publishing arm of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. As such, they publish a wide range of conservative Lutheran books and study materials. As most of you know, I am Presbyterian and Reformed and am not a Lutheran in the specifics of my theology or worship. But I love and have profited greatly from the books and materials from Concordia Publishing House. (I even like the Martin Luther action figure!)

The Concordia Psalter is a gem. It is a beautiful, handy, leather-type collection of the Book of Psalms. Each psalm is preceded by a few bars of music. I suppose the idea is to be able to chant the Psalms. We don’t generally quote Johnny Cash songs or Christmas carols; rather, we sing them. I like the idea of singing the Psalms. I reckon it would help us memorize the contents and internalize the words.

There are also brief prayers at the end of each psalm. These prayers were compiled by the Reverend F. Kuegele. As part of my morning devotions, I was reading one or two psalms a day along with these heart-searching prayers.

This book is perfect for mornings, evenings, family devotions, and other times we can carve out for hearing God’s Word. The book is just perfect for taking on a trip. It would also make a great gift. There are several plans given in the beginning of the book to show how the Psalms can read over 30 days or read over a two week period.

Since this book is published by our Lutheran brethren, it is fitting to quote from Brother Martin:

A New Star in the LSB Constellation

Overall a very good psalter. First and foremost, you get the texts, all well-pointed and clearly laid out for chanting. And you get all 150 psalms, not just the ones used on Sundays in the Lutheran Divine Service - so there's your reason for getting this and not just using the psalter that is in the front of the Lutheran Service Book. In addition, you get two new things with this book: psalm prayers for each psalm and additional formula tones. The psalm prayers are excellent and a welcome addition. As a worship planner I have had to compose or edit many a psalm prayer of my own, due to the theological baggage or minimialist approach one often has with other sources for these prayers. These prayers won't cover every sitz im leben for these psalms, but will prove applicable in many situations and so are most welcome. I also appreciate the new tones provided, though I wish more of the tones from LW/LBW had been included. It is laudable that 2-3 tones have been recommended for each psalm. That will provide helpful guidance to less musically astute users of this volume. The preface suggests that, for longer psalms, that one change tones for different sections, such as Lutherans do for the Te Deum in our Matins liturgy. I think this is a commendable idea, but wish the editors had gone ahead and suggested verses for when to do this, and specified which tones they thought would compliment each section best when this approach is used. All of this comes bound in a nice "leatherette" platic/rubber cover, which makes for a classy and durable companion for taking the Lord's ministry on the road.

One small note that made me grin: each formula tone includes the composer and a copyright for each tone. It is nice to be acknowledged as a composer of a tone, but, as one of the composers I readily admit that covering these under copyright is a stretch of the code as I understand it. According to the case law, one needs seven notes IN SEVEN RHYTHMS to copyright something. You can't just copyright a chord progression, for example, because otherwise there'd be endless litigation over who owns the blues. (chuckle) Because formula tones include reciting tones, and because the cadences imply no rhtyhm, they function more has harmonic progressions than actual melodies. So I don't think they are covered by copyright law. Not that it matters: you need the book anyway. So go buy it! : )

Who knew the great novelist was also a poet? I didn't. But, now I do and am delighted to have found this wonderful collection of his, often surprising, poems. This is a must read for those who love Hemingway.

Ernest the Lionized...Evidently he deserves every bit of it

I read this short volume without a clear conception of what Hemingway's poetry would turn out to be. I'd always heard it said that Hemingway's economy in his prose rendered paragraphs into a poetry of their own. But the dynamics of poetry are somewhat different from those of prose: While giving one untrammeled use of the English language (heck, you can even be forgiven a few perversions of grammar), you have to have an ear for meter, let the cadence exalt each verse into a brief apotheosis, where prose writing could take twice as much time to shoot its load. Thankfully, Hemingway was as brilliant (and troubled) a poet as he was a novelist.
Hemingway's early poetry is a good indication of what he was soon to create. From the facetious poems about baseball and high school track teams mimicking the verse of his idols,to the smart allecky "Blank Verse" (written as an imposed classroom assignment), we get a good sense of the wry, often witty Hemingway that was to emerge in parts of books such as the Sun Also Rises. Yes, despite the suicide, despite the preoccupation with war and violent sports (bullfight, anyone?) Hemingway had a knack for giving life to people tersely, but with all the effect that a more prolix writer could. (Take the descriptions of Jake drinking wine from a native's winesack on a bus, exultant at the thought of a fishing trip forthcoming.) This, not to say joyful, but at least sometimes happy side to Pappa's poetry is almost completely supplanted by the style that dominated his years in Europe as a WWII correspondent, Cuba, and Idaho. These poems are more technically adroit, sometimes beautiful, but introspective and often a bit more than morose. Ironic: The same man who inveighed against Dorothy Parker for her failed suicide attempts blew his mind out in some corner of Idaho decades after he'd made a name for himself in literature so rockfast that, as long as there are the literate, there will be the Hemingway-lovers.
That notwithstanding, Hemingway made a name with Farewell to Arms, The Battler, et al. These poems are brilliant, but, for the two of you who've never read a Hemingway prose volume, remember: His novels are just glorious poems with more action, characters and plot. And are far more reflective of his genius than even these wonderful selections.

An Excellent Compilation

Author Nicholas Georgiannis has done Hemingway readers -- and poetry readers in general -- a great service by compiling this popular author's poems into an authorized version. Readers will find that Hemingway's poems run the gamut from starkly serious to bitter to silly, often revealing an acrid sense of humor. Those unfamiliar with Hemingway's poetic works will find Georgiannis' Introduction quite helpful in setting the literary background. Furthermore, readers will find the 'Explanatory Notes' and 'Related Readings' at the end of the book are quite helpful in understanding Hemingway's terms and references. My only problem with the book is Georgiannis' decision not to include certain "controversial poems", including 'Hurray for Fonnie Richardson', because it "could hurt a living person." (162) His decision not to hurt anyone is admirable and understandable, but in the end not to be publish those works would be illiberal. So circumstanced, serious students of Hemingway will want the complete man, sins and all. Not to worry: his greatness will go undiminished thanks to the efforts of authors like Nicholas Georgiannis.

Yet another fantastic story by Ms. Buroker!

If you haven't read the first 3 books in Lindsay Buroker's Dragon Blood series, I suggest you do so before picking this one up. Patterns picks up immediately after Blood Charged (book 3) ends and books 1 and 2 bring together the 4 main characters.

As with the other books, I felt as if I was watching the plot unfold in person. The writing has a smooth flow to it and I was able to read the entire book in a few hours, mostly because I simply could not put it down. This book is an exciting adventure to an island full of secrets and danger. The characters are extremely relatable, and you will be full of empathy as they deal with their emotions, relationships, and the trials of survival and success.

Magic, a dragon, action, adventure, and even some smooching! You will love this series! I also highly recommend reading the full Emperor's Edge series by Lindsay Buroker (the EE books, Salt and Swords, Encrypted books) if you enjoyed the Dragon Blood series.

About the Author
Angelo Baggini is currently a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Bergamo and also works as a consultant with his own company, Engineering Consulting and Design. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pavia in 1997 with a thesis on 'EMC aspects on dry type cast resin power transformers' and is active in the technical communications field, having written 2 dissemination books, over 100 press and scientific articles and over 50 papers for seminars and conferences. He teaches courses on 'Elements of Electrical Power Engineering' and also has experience carrying out feasibility studies, energy audits and energy loss evaluation of transformers. He is a member of the Italian Electrical Committee (CEI) and the European Committee for Electrical Standardization (CENELEC), carrying out work for several committee standards groups.

Not the handbook that I had hoped for

We own a Fluke power quality analyzer that we use to test industrial and commercial power distribution systems inside customer facilities. I purchased this book hoping to gain more knowledge about power quality terms, problems and solutions. The book is geared toward electrical distribution systems at the utility level. It discusses power quality theory but does not address the hows and whys of power quality analysis and power quality solutions.
