Shakespeare's Theatre of War, by Nicholas de Somogyi

The period between 1585 (when Elizabeth formally committed her military support to the Dutch wars against Spain) and 1604 (when James at last brought it to an end) was one in which English life was preoccupied by the menace and actuality of war. The same period spans English drama’s coming of age, from Tamburlaine to Hamlet. In this thought-provoking book, Nick de Somogyi draws on a wide range of contemporary military literature (news-letters and war-treatises, maps and manuals), to demonstrate how deeply wartime experience influenced the production and reception of Elizabethan theatre. In a series of vivid parallels, the roles of soldier and actor, the setting of battlefield and stage, and the context of playhouse and muster are shown to have been rooted in the common experience of war. The local armoury served as a props department; the stage as a military lecture-hall. News from the front line has always been shrouded in the fog of war. Shakespeare’s Rumour is here seen as kindred to such equally dubious messengers as his Armado, Falstaff or Pistol; soldiers have always told tall tales, military ghost-stories that are here shown to have seeped into such narratives as The Spanish Tragedy and Henry V. This book concludes with a sustained account of Hamlet, a play which both dramatises the Elizabethan context of war-fever, and embodies in its three variant texts the war and peace that shaped its production. By affording scrutiny to each of its title’s components, Shakespeare’s Theatre of War provides a compelling argument for reassessing the drama of Shakespeare and his contemporaries within the enduring context of the military culture and wartime experience of his age.

Review
'...it is gratifying to see the appearance of Nick de Somogyi's Shakespeare's Theatre of War...Following a chapter on the rumors of war, de Somogyi launches into the two final chapters that make this book exceptional. The chapter entitled "The Ghosts in War" is splendidly conceived...The discussion of Hamlet forms a brilliant conclusion...' Renaissance Quarterly, Vol. LI, No. 4 (Winter 1999) 'Somogyi's exploration of wartime Elizabethan England convincingly shows the correlation, indeeed, the parallels between the battlefield and the stage.' The Shakespeare Newsletter, No. 49, No. 2 (Summer 1999) 'De Somogyi's scholarly methods deserve only praise; and copious notes, a thorough bibliography of primary and secondary sources, and a usefully enhances his work.' Sixteenth Century Journal XXXI/3 2000 'Nick de Somogyi presents powerful, compelling arguements for placing the dramas of Shakespeare and his contemporaries within the context of militarism that will provide scholars and students with important ways to understand and appreciate those works.' Sixteenth Century Journal XXXI/3 2000 'De Somogyi admirably fills the relatively empty field with a detailed examination...This new work will be especially useful to Shakespeareans whose knowledge of the period is limited primarily to the Armada and perhaps strife in Ireland...Nick de Somogyi's six well-researched and informative chapters perform a valuable service to Shakespeareans by rounding out our awareness of the European conflicts that pressed upon the English people of the time, and by reminding us how much and in how many ways the theaters of Elizabethan England were theaters of war. ' Shakespeare Quarterly, Vol 51 'De Somogyi's scholarly methods deserve only praise; and copious notes, a thorough bibliography of primary and secondary sources, and a useful index enhances his work.' Sixteenth Century Journal 'Nick de Somogyi presents powerful, compelling arguements for placing the dramas of Shakespeare and his contemporaries with the context of militarism that will provide scholars and students with important ways to understand and appreciate those works.' Review
"Alan Kraft authors a thought-provoking work on a traditionally divisive subject, providing a grace-filled and honest interpretation of historically difficult scriptural passages. No matter what your current position is regarding the Spirit, I would highly recommend More to drive you deeper into a biblical understanding of the person, role, gifting and work of the Holy Spirit of God."
Jason Elam, Author and former kicker for the Denver Broncos

"What I love about Kraft's approach is that it is not doctrinaire. It is not argumentative. It is instead tender in its understanding that we as humans experience God in different ways--and that this is the beauty of the Body of Christ. I applaud this work. It is a book on the role of the Holy Spirit designed for every heart that is crying, More!"
Karen Mains, Author and Director of Hungry Souls

"Probably the greatest need in the Church today is to have a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. And yet scripture teaches it's the responsibility of every Christ follower to steward our heart to be hungry and open for the work of God the Holy Spirit in our life. In his book More, Alan Kraft does an excellent job describing what happens when a Christ follower enjoys the filling and fellowship of the Holy Spirit."
Gerard Long, Executive Director, Alpha USA

"Alan Kraft has written a very helpful and thought-provoking book. It's a clear, well-researched, and incredibly practical approach to an often controversial subject. Odds are you won't agree with everything he says--I'm not sure I agree with it all. But I can guarantee you that your walk with God will be richer, more intimate, and more powerful if you take the time to carefully consider and then apply the important things he has to say. Some of them will be life changers."
Larry Osborne, Author and Pastor of North Coast Church, Vista CA

Written on biblical bedrock, with a pastor's heart, Alan shows us that the Holy Spirit is a person with whom we can cultivate intimacy; he shows us how to recognize and listen to the voice of the Spirit; and most importantly he shows us how to live filled with the power of the Spirit so that muddling through until heaven is inconceivable! If you are hungry for MORE of God, this book will change your life and the way you live out your faith. Really.
Michael John Cusick, Author of Surfing for God, Founder of Restoring the Soul

From the Author
Thanks so much for your interest in my newest book More. This book is a bit of a sequel to my first book, Good News For Those Trying Harder. In that book, I wanted to help people experience the freedom and joy of living the gospel. In this book, I hope to help believers experience more of the Holy Spirit in their everyday lives.

So many Christ-followers I know long to experience more of the Holy Spirit...but are hesitant to go there. Some grew up in charismatic churches but got turned off by the excesses they witnessed. Others have been taught that the Spirit no longer works the way He did in the New Testament.

Is it possible to experience the Holy Spirit in a real way, without all the weirdness and all the labels? Absolutely! This book is a reflection of my own journey--a journey that includes serving as lead pastor of an evangelical church that preaches the gospel, believes in the authority of God's word, prays for the sick, and teaches people how regularly to hear God's voice. We believe that experiencing the Spirit is normal Christianity, and that these things need no longer divide the body of Christ.

I hope you enjoy the book!

By M. G. Hendrickson
One of the hallmarks of a great teacher is the ability to simplify complex topics without being simplistic. Alan Kraft has done just that with this book. He is a great teacher and has done us all a favor by turning his teaching into writing. Not only is writing a book today on the Holy Spirit a complex challenge, it is also controversial. Yet Pastor Kraft has succeeded on both counts in giving us a clear, biblical and extremely practical exposition on the Holy Spirit while not shying away from controversial topics. With gentleness, yet boldness Kraft challenges the reader to not be satisfied with the status quo but go deeper and experience more of the Holy Spirit.

This is a five star book and it is especially beneficial for those of us who have been formed in non-charismatic churches. It’s a book on the Holy Spirit for the rest of us. I have been putting these principles into practice and it is changing my life.

The road won't travel itself...
By Bram F.
Sometimes the surest path is least expected...

In a post-modern enlightenment society, all the most important answers are scientific - reducible, reproducible, regular. Too bad God doesn't play by those rules. It's one of the most important discoveries of any honest spiritual pilgrim, and pastor Alan Kraft has made a career of the road less traveled. Thousands of his church members would attest that it's a very good thing he did.

MORE is much more than a book - it's a manifesto to a jaded generation tired of triteness and simple solutions. The Spirit of the Living God may, in fact, be found, and the method isn't so difficult. Life may be complicated, but there's a God who can handle your contradictions and simply offers Himself as the answer.

If you're ready to embark on an intrepid adventure of spiritual discovery that actually pays off, this book just might be roadmap you've been wanting all along.

By Martin D Dziuk
This is one of my favorite books! Alan is a craftsman with words. His writing style will speak to the scholar and the layman. His insights challenge you and his drive for "More" is contagious. His depth of application of once misunderstood theological areas is spot on and freeing. I appreciate his understanding of history, how we're missing out on what gave us our roots and started our movement, and his willingness to go where others may fear. Alan does not take his experience and make his theology fit, instead he starts with what the Bible says and applies it to everyday life. This book could, very well, start a revival of "More". I highly recommend this book. You can't borrow mine. I'm reading it again.

Ingrid Donat, by Anne Bony

  • The first comprehensive monograph on Ingrid, one of the most sought after designers of the end of the 20th century
  • Donat creates exceptional pieces of sculpted furniture, in the great tradition of Giacometti

  • Ingrid Donat creates sculpted furniture, most often in bronze. Taking a painterly approach to this weighty medium, Donat draws on diverse decorative influences. Art Deco, tribal tattooing, the work of Gustav Klimt and Armand-Albert Rateau have all inspired the intricate patterning of her work.

Elements of Donat's practice remain consistent. Her creative process begins with a sheet of wax, which she inscribes, carves and shapes to form the skin of her work. This structure is then applied to her designs. She herself engraves the bronzes, paints the upholstery and treats the wood. Her pieces have been cast at the same bronze foundry, the Blanchet-Landowski, for over 20 years, as the stamp they bear goes to prove. Though often large and heavy, there is a delicacy to Donat's work. Almost like armor, she uses bronze to shield an idea of the fragile.

In addition to her skilled craft, Donat is also an accomplished engineer. 'Commode 7 Engrenages' incorporates a column of cogs into its sides. They begin to whir when the chest's drawers are opened or closed. The intrinsic mechanism animates the piece with movement and sound.

Born in Paris into a family of artists, Donat was raised in Sweden. In 1975 she returned to her birthplace to explore her passion for sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. During these years she began to apply her sculptural talent to functional pieces, strongly encouraged by her mentor Diego Giacometti. Only in 1998 did Donat begin to exhibit publicly a body of work she had been creating for over twenty years..

An Essential Book for Learning OpenGL, But ...
By W. H. Niehoff
First, let me say that the reorganization of text and code embodied in the Sixth Edition of the OpenGL Superbible was a good move. Oh, I have a few gripes and grumbles relating to the reorganization (e.g., it seems like Chapter 5 will never end. It could be split, deferring pieces to later and appropriate contexts.) The reorganization of the sample code is a good step forward. There is less dependence on mysterious libraries. And, the essential support code has been reorganized into a more attractive “framework.”
Be prepared for a lot of emphasis on shader programming. Face up to it: It’s the nature of the modern beast. If you’re not ready for that, one suggestion is to start with an earlier edition – one that focuses on earlier versions of OpenGL, and then grow to love it.
Having gone through many (aborigines are said to have a ternary number system: 1, 2, many) editions of the Superbible, I find it necessary to keep a copy of a corresponding Redbook (OpenGL Programming Guide) edition handy. In that sense, I find the Superbible to be an essential learning aid. But …

It was indeed unfortunate to find that the current authors and publisher continued to follow the habits of previous authors and publishers of walking away from what I view as their responsibility to their readership:

1. Others have complained about the quality of the black and white illustrations. They were correct: the printing of screenshots is terrible. The majority of the current authors are experienced authors. (a) They should have avoided the problem. (b) The editor should have caught the problem before going to press. (c) The printer should have called attention to the problem before committing to a run.

2. There is no consistent way of tying a screenshot or a code listing to a project name in the source code provided as a download on the book’s web site. I made it a point to deduce, by one means or another, the project name from the text or code if the project name was not explicitly mentioned (which was the usual case). The authors could have provided an index in the download’s README file.

3. In the Preface, an author states, “We made a bunch of mistakes – we’re certain of it. … If you think you see something that doesn’t quite gel, check the book’s Web site for errata.” I’m writing this review in June 2014, almost a year after publication of the book. There are no errata on the web site. Moreover, there is no mechanism for submitting errata.

4. The code I downloaded (dated November 2013) built on Visual Studio 2010 successfully. All but a few projects executed without error. I found the distribution for VS 2010 available on GitHub to be useless: Apparently the last person to build it built it with VS 2013. I considered submitting an issue, but got discouraged when I saw that the last commits were made seven or eight months ago.

5. The book’s Appendix C describes two tools, ktxtool and dds2ktx, which it says is available in the source code. Not so.

6. I searched for but could not find an OpenGL Superbible forum. The best I could find was the general OpenGL forum. The last blog entry on the book’s web site is dated February 2014. Apparently the authors have better things to do.

In scoring a rating for this edition of the OpenGL Superbible, I started with five stars. After all, I consider it and the Redbook to be essential components to learning OpenGL. Then, because of the lousy illustrations and the authors’ neglect, I backed off two stars. A one-star deduction would not have been enough.

It occurs to me that all of the problems enumerated above could be resolved on the book’s web site. I would be glad to improve my rating if the authors (or even someone else) would step up to addressing them.

Excellent Introduction to OpenGL, No Apple Support (for good reason)
By BookHoarder
I own every edition of this excellent book. One significant change in this edition that readers should be aware of is the complete abandonment of OpenGL on Apple's platform. From the preface of the book: "Gone is official support for the Apple Mac platform. Almost all of the new content in this edition requires features introduced with OpenGL 4.4 or 4.5, or recent OpenGL extensions -- none of which were supported by OS X at the time of writing. There is no expectation that Apple will further invest in its OpenGL implementation, so we encourage our readers to move away from the platform."

To be fair, the current state of OpenGL on the Mac is poor. Mavericks supports OpenGL 4.1, which is now 5 years old (2010). Apple has announced that the future of graphics development on Apple devices will be "Metal", which is an Apple-proprietary low level hardware interface. This is an unfortunate development for those wanting to target multiple platforms, which is a primary motivation for using OpenGL.

If you want to develop for the Mac, you should pick up a previous edition of this excellent book, probably 6th or even 5th edition.

7th ed: OpenGL 4.5
6th ed: OpenGL 4.3
5th ed: OpenGL 3.3
4th ed: OpenGL 2.1
3rd ed: OpenGL 2.0 and 1.5
2nd ed: OpenGL 1.2, 1.1

For Beginners
By R.E
The main issue I have with this book is the dependency to the sb6 library which is the author's wrapper library around OpenGL.

If the book were titled the SB6 Library superbible, It would have been ok but after reading the claims at the beginning of the book stating that this book is meant to go over the OpenGL library without jumping back and fourth I couldn't help but wonder why the authors chose to include their own library which defeats that purpose to some extent.

Granted the library simplifies things but that's not the purpose of a book. Since the target audience is already familiar with C++, there's no need to wrap the main() function for example, which I find unnecessary. This may be fine for the author but we all have different styles of coding and it's not the author's place to force a framework in order to explain how the OpenGL pipeline works.

This is a book about OpenGL and the code should run out of the box with dependencies to OpenGL, GLUT and GLFW being acceptable. If the authors chose to develop a wrapper library, the library should be part of the text as an illustration to how things are put together. Also what would be more acceptable is if the sb6 library's cpp source code was available to view instead of distributing a black box which may confuse the reader.

Also when adding shader code, the authors fail to mention the appropriate code updates to the rendering functions which can be a bit inconvenient. Also failure to delete compiled shaders in one of the examples shoud be avoided.

The OpenGL pipeline is getting more and more complex and I can see the appeal in simplifying it by making it more accessible but writing a book about a library and forcing a black box framework is unacceptable. This book does explain things well I must admit but for experienced C++ and OpenGL users, I recommend the Red Book for a more thorough read and detailed reference.

Stimulated Brillouin Scattering: Fundamentals and Applications (Series in Optics and Optoelectronics), by M J Damzen, V Vlad, Anca Mocofan

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is the most important example of a stimulated scattering process-light scattering that occurs when the intensity of the light field itself affects the propagating medium. A phenomenon that has been known of for some 35 years in solid state laser research, it has recently become relevant in the optical fiber industry, due to the increasing intensity required in optical fiber cores (and their long interaction lengths). SBS is one of the major limiting factors on the amount of power that can be transmitted via an optical fiber.

This book describes the underlying physics of SBS, much of which are applicable to other fields of research, including, to some extent, plasma physics. It provides references to experimental details throughout. Later chapters investigate more advanced concepts and feature the problems faced by researchers using optical fibers.

The Well, by A. J. Whitten

If Hamlet thought he had issues, he should have talked to Cooper Warner.

His mother’s normally sunny demeanor has turned into something—homicidal.

And what’s worse, she has help in her hunt for Cooper: A ravenous monster living at the bottom of the old well in the woods behind their house. She’s determined to deliver her 14-year-old son straight into the creature’s eager clutches. Cooper turns to his girlfriend, Megan, for help, but then, to his horror, the creature takes her prisoner.
Now, it’s up to Cooper to fend off his murderous mother, finish his Hamlet paper, and enter the putrid lair at the bottom of the well to rescue Megan. And when he confronts the creature, Cooper must make the toughest decision of his life: kill, or be killed.

Inspired by Hamlet, THE WELL puts a terrifying twist on the Shakespearean classic.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–9—High school freshman Cooper Warner's stepfather makes his life miserable, and his English-teacher father only seems to care about how well he does on his Hamlet paper. But these problems pale in comparison with the biggest one of all: his mother is trying to kill him. At the beginning of the story, she pushes him into a slimy old well on the vineyard property owned by her new husband. As Cooper tries to escape, he begins to realize that a hideous creature is toying with him, hungry for his blood. Cooper makes it out of the well, but the creature is determined to hunt him down and force him to take its place, and it has enlisted the help of his stepfather and his seemingly possessed mother. Cooper tries to enlist his girlfriend's help, but when the creature abducts her, and then uses her and his brother as bait, Cooper realizes that he is intended to be a sacrifice for the continued fertility of the land and that he will have to confront the monster. The author claims to have been inspired by Hamlet, but the connection with Shakespeare's play is tenuous at best. The story has a few good touches, as when the creature possesses Cooper's MySpace page, but there are too many plot holes and too much is left unexplained. The adult characters are clichs, and the numerous pop culture and product references guarantee that this book will date quickly.—Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ

Shakespeare Connection?
By Sesho
A.J. Whitten is a pseudonym for mother and daughter writing team Shirley and Amanda Jump. Shirley is a prolific romance writer and her daughter is, well, a teenager. This does not bode well for a novel when you have a combo of a hack and an inexperienced girl narrating a story. The parts where Cooper has to deal with the creature in the well come off quite well, being equal parts creepiness and fear. I guess I would have to give Shirley credit for those parts. As for the lame cultural references and feeble attempts to be "teen-hip" with the dialogue, I would lay that solely at the feet of Amanda. Though the bookjacket references Hamlet quite heavily, the two authors are never really able to bring Shakespeare into the book with any significant rhyme or reason. Cooper happens to be reading Shakespeare and there just happens to be a novel happening so they should go together, right? right? Something else that grated on my nerves a bit was Cooper's inability to get anyone to help him. The only cop interested in the goings on is an alcoholic that can barely put one and one together, much less face a supernatural force. All in all, the book was a decent read, but the abilty of its writers ultimately doomed it to mediocrity.

Hard, hard, hard to get through...
By Suzanne Fisher
I've had this sitting by my bedside table, on my kitchen table, and on my desk for about 6 months now. I've read it off and on, and finally plowed through it today to knock out this review. There've just always been...more interesting things to do. The Well is supposed to be a suspenseful book for middle- to high-schoolers, but instead of suspenseful, it is predictable and falls on the slasher flick side rather than the Shyamalan side of horror.

The youth interested in suspense and horror at this age are more likely to be reading Stephen King already, and some of the subject matter in this book does not make good reading for younger readers, see SPOILERS BELOW*******************

i.e. brains spilled on the ground, pus-filled skin, baby-eating monsters, murdering moms.....

At any rate, this might be a good library rental for those older readers who are intrigued by the concept, but check it out before buying.

In Schools We Trust: Creating Communities of Learning in an Era of Testing and Standardization, by Deborah Meier

We are in an era of radical distrust of public education. Increasingly, we turn to standardized tests and standardized curricula-now adopted by all fifty states-as our national surrogates for trust.

Legendary school founder and reformer Deborah Meier believes fiercely that schools have to win our faith by showing they can do their job. But she argues just as fiercely that standardized testing is precisely the wrong way to that end. The tests themselves, she argues, cannot give the results they claim. And in the meantime, they undermine the kind of education we actually want.

In this multilayered exploration of trust and schools, Meier critiques the ideology of testing and puts forward a different vision, forged in the success stories of small public schools she and her colleagues have created in Boston and New York. These nationally acclaimed schools are built, famously, around trusting teachers-and students and parents-to use their own judgment.

Meier traces the enormous educational value of trust; the crucial and complicated trust between parents and teachers; how teachers need to become better judges of each others' work; how race and class complicate trust at all levels; and how we can begin to 'scale up' from the kinds of successes she has created.

From Publishers Weekly
While policy makers agree that big city public schools are failing to meet children's needs, their solutions usually involve shifting responsibility to distant figures chancellors, mayors and relying on abstract performance evaluation tools, like standardized tests. From her own experience designing and operating various alternative public schools, progressive educator Meier (The Power of Their Ideas) has a different assessment: schools must be smaller, more self-governed and places of choice, so kids and their families feel they are truly part of these communities of learning. Students need to spend more time around adults who are doing adult work, which builds familiarity, trust and respect, as well as exposure to new skills. Families also need to be brought into the mix, so they're comfortable with the school, the teachers and the educational agenda. Teachers need time and space to develop collegial relations with each other, both to improve educational practices and to model responsible critical behavior for students. According to Meier, the currently fashionable educational panacea increased standardized testing is either irrelevant to academic excellence or an actual deterrent, as teachers teach to the test and ignore everything that's not on it. Likewise, teaching children test-taking techniques trains them to distrust their own intuition about what's right or wrong. Reliance on test results (which are largely meaningless, Meier says) denies parents' and teachers' ability to assess learning. This is a passionate, jargon-free plea for a rerouting of educational reform, sure to energize committed parents, progressive educators and maybe even a politician or two.

From Library Journal
There is a thoughtful double entendre in the title of this latest work by the award-winning author of The Power of Their Ideas. First, as a society, we trust our schools to educate children and to transmit to them a set of democratic ideals. Second, if these goals are to be met, we must foster an environment of trust within our schools both among educators and between educators and the children they serve. Calling the school a "crucible of democratic life," Meier (The Power of Their Ideas) draws on her years of experience at "break-the-mold" schools like New York's Central Park East and Boston's Mission Hill School to describe the importance of promoting trust among all participants in the educational venture, to question the value of standardized testing and reform models devoted to high-stakes assessment, and to describe the institutional factors that can undermine reform efforts that focus on the development of small schools within the public school system. Although the narrative tying these strands of argument together is not as easy to follow as it might be, Meier effectively draws on earlier works in all these areas, e.g., Theodore R. Sizer's Horace's Compromise and Eliot Levine's One Kid at a Time, to create a passionate account of what schooling could be. For all collections. Scott Walter, Washington State Univ Lib., Pullman

Common sense, common sense, common sense
By Ron Miller
As an educator (high school guidance counselor), union activist and progressive skeptic, I strongly urge folks far and wide to read Meier's book "In Schools We Trust." Not only is she easy to read but she makes sense out of difficult material.
Meier uses examples from her own experiences and links them to the weighty issues we face in public education. She uses humor as well as lofty research to back up her claims. In an early passage she challenges us to bring adults and children closer together ( a theme she returns to at the end), so that children can learn what it means to be an adult. In doing so she has us ponder our own adult culture. For instance, why don't we let children copy? since that's exactly what we urge adults to do (i.e. through best practices) and what would that mean if we did allow it?
All in all a good read, a refreshing look at schooling.

Modeling Adulthood
By J. Blackburn

I just taught my daughter to ride her bike this week. I just taught my son to swim. Interesting lessons were gleaned from these familial experiences. Both events were preceded by literally years of work. The events happened in a minute, a fraction of the time invested. Yet, there was one crucial element that pervaded the entire process. That element was trust. Trust is the facet of education that is critical to set children free to explore the possibilities. The fascinating results from my children arrived after the event of learning. When my daughter finally learned to trust me to catch her then she was able to focus on balancing her moving bike. Within a minute she fully committed to her task, my hands came off the bike, and she was off. She learned; then she left me behind and figured out how to self-start, stop, and turn. My son finally trusted I would be there beside him and wouldn't let him drown. He then swam a pool length. He then left me behind and jumped off the diving board, then began to flip and to dive. If we are seeking an educational system that empowers and equips students to independently explore their possibilities, then we must pursue a school culture of trust.
Deborah Meier's book, In Schools We Trust, delves into this critical issue as paramount to doing what is best for kids. Her book is arranged in three sections. The first section tackles how trust must be nurtured between all stakeholders. The second section dismantles the idea that standardized tests can achieve what we hope they will. The third section returns to the larger picture of how we can and must develop a culture that allows the messiness of humanity within accountability and trust.
The middle section is crucial to reference for anyone researching standardized testing on learning. Yet, no school teacher needs convincing that such tests fail to help students achieve their best. So, we will not focus upon Meier's excellent historical analysis. Instead it is the larger picture of what real trust requires and what real accountability must account for that is worthy of frontline teachers' time.
If you have time to read only a portion of this book, then read what Meier describes as "Learning in the company of Adults." Meier correctly criticizes our failure as a society to raise democratic citizens by reducing their time with adults. "We are--in short--perhaps the only civilization in history that organizes its youth so that the nearer they get to being adults the less and less likely they are to know any adults" (p.23). She uses the analogy of learning to drive a car. "Think how efficiently virtually all young people learn to drive a car if they have lived for years in a family of drivers, have ridden in the front seat, have imitated (both in their head and in their bodies) the motions of a driver, have gotten a feel for where the sides of the car are and how close the outside world is. When my mother finally suggested I should move into the driver's seat, I like so many of my friends, already knew how to drive--except I was surprised when I tried to restart the car on a hill, plus there were the mysteries of parallel parking.... Keep in mind that despite the cost we almost never try to teach anyone how to drive except one-on-one." (p.17). Think about it. Would you trust new drivers if you knew they had passed a minimum competency pen and paper test? Would that build trust? Would that be sufficient accountability? Yet, what do we do? We place teachers in classes where they do not model the skills, they talk about them to large groups of kids and then give them a paper test and claim they will be excellent citizens. Is it working? No, and definitely not in the new world that has arrived.
We expect children to become adults and model adult democracy; but when have they actually seen it? When have they seen two adults sit down in front of them and have a difficult discussion around an issue that has no easy answer? When have they seen adults ask other adults for their source of information before accepting an idea? When have they seen adults disagree on a topic and still be civil? On TV? At their family dinner? They don't see it and their teachers are not modeling exploration, innovation, and creativity, the skills that experts agree are critical for children of the 21st century. As Meier explains, " There is no way to get around it; the willingness to take risks, ask questions, and make mistakes is a requirement for the development of expertise. We can learn secretly, but at a price" (p.14). How many front line teachers work within a system that encourages them to explore, allowing them to make public mistakes without punishment? I would suggest very few.
What I love about Meier's work is that is embraces the "messiness" of raising children. There is no silver bullet program or test that will eradicate the need for simple trust in other human beings. If we are going to raise a democratic society to step into our shoes when they come of age we must begin that work now. "For me the most important answer to the question "Why save public education?" is this: It is in schools that we learn the art of living together as citizens, and it is in public schools that we are obliged to defend the idea of a public, not only a private, interest" (p. 176). Meier's provides her priorities and recipies for how she did it at the Mission Hill School in Boston, but her recipe is general enough to be tweaked by any good cook, I mean educator. "What doesn't work are schools that think we can be made uniform, that the messy business of learning to deal with each other can be bypassed by rules imposed by people who don't know us in all our particularities" (p.40).
I end with this, "Like the learning of all important things, the learning of these democratic habits of mind happens only when children are in the real company of adults they trust and when adults have sufficient powers--and the leisure--to be good company. On the largest political scale, this is why I worry so much about--and work so hard to change--the way children are growing up without adult company, a community of elders. In some ways we accept our children's adulthood long before we once did, and in other ways we continue to treat them as children for far longer" (pp.177-178). It was interesting that the week before my daughter learned to ride her bike she watched her mom take a horrible bike wreck. A few weeks before my son swam he watched dad take pointers from mom on how to swim better. Maybe it was circumstances that had no bearing on their world; maybe it was the key to building their trust. "...never in the history of the species did one think of raising the young to become adults in the absence of the company of adults. And, above all, in the absence of adults whom children imagine becoming, or--and here was the key--whom children even knew well enough to imagine trusting" (p. 179).

Praise for "IN SCHOOLS WE TRUST"
By Bonnie J. Brown
Progressive educator, Deborah Meier, a legendary school founder and reformer addresses the issue of mistrust in her book "IN SCHOOLS WE TRUST". Policy makers and communities across America feel that public schools are failing to meet our student's academic needs. The educational policy makers promote the notion that standarized tests are an effective tool to measure academic achievement in the nation's youth. Meier challenges this theory making the comparison between schools that rely upon standardized tests versus small, self-governed schools. Meier focuses on her theory that schools flourish when classes are smaller, intimate and when parents take an active role in their child's educational experience. Both parents and teachers can better assess learning in this educational setting as opposed to one that merely trains students to improve their test taking techniques. This plea for educational reform asks that parents and educators re-evaluate the complete learning process in our schools with the use of standardized tests.
Deborah Meier simply addresses the downfalls of standardized testing and its effects on student learning.
