C. W. Ceram (January 20, 1915 – April 12, 1972) was a German journalist and author. His most notable work, Gods, Graves and Scholars: The Story of Archaelogy – was published in 28 languages and had over 5 million copies in circulation. This is a well-written, accessible introduction to the founding years and incredible sites of early archaelolgy and archaeologists. However, it was written and updated over fifty years ago, so much of the science and theories about these early sites is outdated. Still, an easy and fun read...

Great story & spunky characters

Loved this story! Bridget is such a spunky character and I was laughing out loud at least once in every chapter at her antics. This book got me started on a medieval period reading kick and I'm excited for her next one!

Bridget was happy and begged her dad to let her become a ...

Bridget was the oldest sister she was engaged to Samson who was abusive. But when the country gets a new king all English engagement were off. Bridget was happy and begged her dad to let her become a nun as she didn’t want to marry if it met being with someone like Samson and you couldn’t be sure. Bridget’s sister Aislinn is to marry Gregoire who is to take over for Bridget’s father. Bridget’s is on her way to visit a sick monk when she comes upon Gregoire - the new Earl- Gregoire and Bridget has instant attraction. Bridget and Gregoire to translate for Aislinn and Gregoire. Aislinn is very quiet and seems to be withdrawn. Gregoire had a bad first marriage and wanted his next bride to want to marry him so there is two weeks before the wedding is due to happen and he wants to court his future wife. Gregoire is a warrior but wants a home and family. Bridget and Gregoire had met five years ago when Gregoire was made Earl.
This was a very good story. The plot was good as was the writing. I liked the fact Gregoire wanted his next wife to want to marry him that is my idea of a good man in that time frame. I felt bad for Bridget if she hadn’t experienced Samson she would be the one that was suppose to marry Gregoire. It just adds extra to the story in a good way. I liked the ins and outs of this story especially the ones concerning Bridget and Gregoire. I recommend.

A toe curler of a romance! A female Cyrano de Bergerac but better.

Comte Gr�goire FitzHenri has been awarded Shyleburgh by William of Normandy the new King of England who replaces the English lords with Normans. As a pledge of loyalty, he is betrothed to the former lord’s – now his seneschal - heir & daughter. But Gr�goire is resolute that his bride must come to him willing and in the 2 weeks prior to their wedding, he commences on a campaign to woo her. Unfortunately the beautiful Aislinn hardly speaks any French while Gr�goire speaks little English & thus it is up to Aislinn’s elder sister Bridget who is fluent in both languages to play the part of interpreter between the two.

This was an absolutely beautifully written story! It is Bridget that Gr�goire finds himself drawn to; her earthly, natural charm & intelligence rather than Aislinn’s pallid, remote beauty. While Aislinn finds Gr�goire's maleness intimidating, Bridget has been secretly idolizing him since meeting him 5 years ago when he was made the Earl. But her decision had been made before then to give up her position as her father’s heir & join a convent after suffering abuse at the hands of her 1st betrothed.

Bridget does her utmost to bring Gr�goire & the somewhat detached Aislinn together but gets her own emotions very much tangled into it. The romance is amazingly intense, as Bridget speaks supposedly of Aislinn’s feelings to Gr�goire, what are her own feelings. She pours out her own wants & yearnings to Gr�goire as “Aislinn’s” to convince him that he is winning Aislinn over but you can feel the heat curling off the pages between Bridget & Gr�goire with every word she speaks.

This was my 1st time reading a book from this author & I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Well-written but liberals will hate it.

My husband bought this book and ask me to read it, which I did, and discovered it to be filled with common sense explanations for why the USA is in its financial mess. Liberals will hate it, though (we are Independents), simply because the facts are backed up by...well...facts!

Decipherable for non-fiscal types

My husband is the money person in the family (he's a CFO). I'm not fiscally/financially illiterate but my eyes do tend to glaze over when people get into the gritty details of finances and economics, corporate or national (and sometimes even personal). However, like many Americans, I presume, I have been very concerned about what is moving us toward our national "fiscal cliff" and how it might be solved. That's why I read this book. The authors do a clear job, for us non-fiscal types, of laying out the situation, explaining details, including with understandable graphs, and offering their approach to a solution. Their solution resembles the Erskine-Bowles recommendations that President Obama called for, then ignored. That solution is looking better all the time, it seems. If you want a concise but knowledgeable explanation of this subject, this is a good place to start, I think.

A tired, familiar and false story line

A mediocre book, with familiar and worn out scare mongering --the sky is falling if we don't cut "entitlements" soon. The Fiscal Cliff was written before the deficit shrunk as a result of economic growth and some cuts mandated by the "sequestration." Not that that fact stops the right-wing Chicken Littles. The scare over the deficit is just an excuse to cut social programs they don't like.

The editors have produced this book for a number of reasons. There has been tremendous growth in the teaching of public relations around the world--enhancing practice in many countries outside North America. There has also been rapid growth in the number of professors who demand theoretical perspectives which might facilitate a unified comparative analysis across countries and regions. Only a few U.S. universities--six documented in this book--now teach courses formerly called "International Public Relations." However, many professors are going abroad to teach and do research. This suggests increased interest in and a need for courses dealing with international public relations. Furthermore, there is a dearth of literature dealing in depth with international PR, an important component of international communication.

This appears to be the first book-length comparative analysis of public relations as practiced in various countries and regions around the world. Although existing books on international PR focus largely on ways in which western practitioners, employers, and clients can operate effectively in other countries, this volume views public relations in each country or region covered from the perspective of practitioners in that country. It contains six chapters designed to provide a theoretical anchor for the 14 country and region analyses. Given the intense interest in public relations education as a factor in professional enhancement, it also discusses issues and practices relating to education.

The reference list contains details of an excellent collection of articles. The examples are clearly illustrated. This is a fascinating book, and applied statisticians, health and medical researchers will like it a lot. Statistical consultants will be fond of the book as a reference guide.

sample size an important aspect of trial design

The authors of this book have a great deal of clinical trial experience in the pharmaceutical industry as well as strong academic backgrounds. For the clinical trial statistician there is now a rich supply of software products to aid in the determination of sample size for a variety of modeling situations. So knowing formulas is no longer important. What is important is to understand the basis for the formulas. This book provides the industrial perspective and the main fixed sample size designs. In this industry trials are constructed to show superiority, noninferiority and equivalence. These three distinct appoaches lead to different results because the null and alternative hypotheses change as you change your goal from superiority to equivalence.

This book makes that important distinction and is very scholarly, providing many of the relevant references. Although most clinical trials are still parallel design randomized controlled trials with fixed sample size, there are more and more trials that allow for sequential decisionmaking and hence the actual total sample size can be subject to randomness. The group sequential trials have been the most successful in this regard. But now there are also more flexible "adaptive designs" that are being used. For group sequential designs see the text by Jennison and Turnbull and for the adaptive designs Chow and Chang and a more recent applied text by Chang are very good sources of information. Software packages that are available to do group sequential and adaptive designs are East by Cytel, Seq+Trials by Insightful Corp., PASS by Number Crunchersand ADDPLAN by a German Company. Also statisticians like Mark Chang and Keaven Anderson have created their own routines for adaptive designs using the R programming language.

nice coverage of typical sample size problems in clinical trials

This is the second edition of a very popular book on sample size estimation that is a valuable reference for any statistician in the industry. we all need to go through such expercises at the beginning of a trial as part of the protocol development.

One disappointment I have with the book is that it does not delineate new topics and other changes/additions from the first edition. Often this is covered by having two Prefaces, the original one from the first edition and a new one from the second edition. The authors unfortunately did not choose to do that. So an owner of the first edition would have to scan through both books to identify the changes.

Another disappointment is the lack of reference to any existing software to do sample size estimation and these days there are a lot of products available. The programs nQuery Advisor and Power and Precision handle equivalence, superiority and noninferiority problems for continuous data. They also provide approximate and exact methods for binomial data. Other packages such as StatXact handle sample size estimation for exact binomial tests as well as for Fisher's Exact test. PASS, S+SeqTrial and East are packages that provide the designs and sample size stopping rules for group sequential procedures and in some cases adaptive designs. Also with the development of version 9 of SAS comes the new procedures power and glmpower that do everything that nQuery can handle.

The value of the book is that it develops the methodology and therefore helps with the understanding of how and when to use the various procedures. Traditional tables that use to be important for sample size calculations are now obsolete given the availability of good software tools. Although the book goes to great lengths to cover almost any application. Most of these applications can be handled these days through the available software packages.

I can definitely recommend this book as a fine reference on sample size estimation for the wide range of trial applications. I would only try to encourage the authors to drop the use of tables and get up to date by recommending the appropriate software for the various applications.
