This is a good book to buy if you want a summary of the content and objectives for the 1Z0-899 Oracle exam.

Pros:
- Provides a good overview of the objectives for the 1Z0-899 Oracle exam.
- I managed to pass the exam without really having to read the Servlet specification.

Cons:
- I wouldn't recommend this book if you don't have a lot of experience with Servlets, JSP and the Deployment Descriptor. I put this book down, read Head First Servlets and JSP, before coming back to this book. You need to know Deployment Descriptor syntax and how to deploy applications in Tomcat before using this book.
- Quite a lot of errors in this book, as well as problems with the review questions. The errata covers it though. I emailed the support team about an error that I found and their reply was to refer me to the errata sheet. They didn't confirm/deny the error or add it to the errata sheet, so I think the support on this book should be better.
- The free online exam that comes with this book does not cover the new Servlet topics.

Good guide, concise and useful, but with some editing errors

Reading this guide from begin to end and making some practices, I obtained a good score in the certification exam. The only complaint about it, is that some details in the practice exams had errors like bad indication of number of answers to choose, and one or two fine details about subtle changes betwen JEE5 and JEE6 that weren't updated in this revisi�n of the book.

This is a third edition of the book. It is quite solid overview of the Java EE web related stuff. A good cheat sheet for cert preparation. So the book will be useful to read.

Candy for the car lover

At $650, how can this tome not fly off the shelves? If size and weight come into the value equation of books, this is a steal. And even though the initial print run may have required an entire boreal forest, let me assure it's worth it. For, besides the shocking impression made by its girth and heft, the book startles with its delicious automotive confections found inside. The cars are simply gorgeous and this book has to be considered the most complete collection of history's most impressive automobiles. Dan Neil's introduction and accompanying captions make for interesting reading, well above and beyond what one might expect of typical coffee table books. This is pretty picture books done by a weighty intellect. It's definitely fun to look at, but also a joy to read.

"By such a 'system' I mean a minimized inventory of component types (a kit of parts) along with rubrics whereby the components may be combined.... The snowflake is the most graphic example in nature of the minimum inventory/maximum diversity principle. In fact, it may be considered an archetype of physicogeometric expression. All planar snow crystals are found to have star-like forms with six corners (or subsets thereof).... However, within this six-fold form, no two snowflakes have ever been known to be exactly alike....

"An integral part of the concept of minimum inventory/maximum diversity systems is the principle of conservation of resources. The formative processes in natural structure are characteristically governed by least-energy responses. Perhaps the simplest expression of this is found in the principle of closest packing, a principle which even in its most elementary form is common in both the animate and inanimate worlds."

Pearce's work follows in the tradition established by D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson and Konrad Wachsmann, and reflects his earlier close working association with Charles Eames and Buckminster Fuller. With Eames, he contributed to the design of seating and other furniture systems, and he edited the preliminary text of Fuller's Synergetics, that grand summary of his thoughts, and prepared the illustrations for the published version of that book.

Many of the ideas explored in this book have already undergone "reduction to practice" in the firm Pearce founded, Synestructics, Inc. Its initial products have been kits and kites, and a ministructure large enough for kids to crawl through, the "Curved Space Labyrinth," a saddle polyhedra system made of transparent plastic. Adult-sized structures, and indeed megastructures, based on these principles can be realized as soon as entrepreneurs emerge whose vision is commensurate with that of Peter Pearce.

refreshing colored and eye-opening gem

Michael Kelly did an excellent job in presenting the so neglected serpentine mysteries. You should know that the curriculum is part of the so called Left-hand-path, and is for the few who dare to awaken the serpent energies within themselves.
For those who expect a grimoire full of evil formulas, they will be utterly disappointed and certainly have no clue what the serpentine mysteries are about.

What I especially like is that the author clearly states that there isn't a fast spoon-fed way to initiation in these matters, nor is it always a pleasant journey.
This book presents a working and practical curriculum. It should take several years ,so not even a entire life to fully implement the content of this little gem.

This is the book i have gone back to multiple times since i have had multiple questions about the Left Hand Path, and this one seems to answer it in the way i needed it to. Don't let the other flowery reviews fool you this book series is not for the light hearted.... I loved reading the books because it gave me the understanding that i was not ready for the path early on, however I will keep them for later on in my path of discovery into who i really am on the magickal path...

This book makes me angry

If you're actually reading a review of a book then I imagine you've been in this situation before. You turn the last page (swipe the last location, whatever) of a fantastic book and then it hits you.

It's over.

That book that so completely swallowed you whole has ended and there's no more. No more exciting revelations. No more interesting characters. No more wondering what's on the next page because there is no next page.

And then the anger sets in. Anger because you know, no matter what, the next book you read can't possibly be this good. You'll likely pick up something tepid or boring or uninteresting, at least by comparison to what you just finished. And you're angry because all books should be this fun but they aren't, they just aren't.

The Rook is one of those books. So if the brief description available on the page or other reviews hasn't swayed you, then at least you can be warned that reading this may ruin other book reading for a while.

At least until the sequel comes out.

Shut Up and Take My Money!

About once a week I get really excited about a new novel I'm reading, declaring that it might just be the best book I've read all year. Ask my friends, they'll resignedly confirm this. In keeping with tradition, 80 pages into The Rook by Daniel O'Malley my excitement was running full bore. "You have to buy this book! It is so freaking awesome!" I would say. Their reply: finish the book, write a review, and then tell us to buy it. Yeah well I've finished the book, this is me writing the review, and at the very end I'm going to tell you to buy it.

If you look up reviews or descriptions of The Rook you are bound to come away with a quite the impression. I've seen comparisons made to X-Men, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ghostbusters, Monty Python, Men in Black, The Maltese Falcon, and The Bourne Identity. I would agree with those comparisons and hazard to throw in a few comparisons of my own. The Rook also blends the supernatural and the mundane like Lev Grossman's The Magicians, and may even be considered reminiscent of some of the creepier episodes of Doctor Who. So yeah, that is a lot to take in. It sounds like this O'Malley guy took a sci-fi/fantasy buffet and crammed it all in a blender. Fortunately the result isn't some hideous fictional slop, but a genre-bending supernatural spy thriller smoothie.

Myfanwy Thomas opens her eyes and she is not who she was. Surrounding her are dead men wearing suits and latex gloves. She is aching from a serious beating and soaked to the bone from the rain. In her pocket is a letter from her body's previous occupant warning her of an imminent threat to her life. She is given two options: run away and live in comfort or find out who has betrayed her and given her a wicked case of amnesia. And so begins Myfanwy's service in Her Majesty's Supernatural Secret Service.

I cannot believe that The Rook is Daniel O'Malley's debut novel. Seriously. I know of plenty notable authors that go their whole career without writing anything near as inventive and entertaining as The Rook. It's almost criminal how good this book is. It even has an amnesia plot for God's sake! Amnesia plots are usually so awful. Myfanwy, without Myfanwy (pronounced like Tiffany but with an `M') I'm not sure O'Malley could have pulled it off. Myfanwy is thrust into the cloak and dagger world of the Chequy, a secret organization dedicated to defending Queen and Country against paranormal threats, with only letters from her pre-amnesia self for guidance. The two Myfanwy's really can be considered separate characters. The pre-amnesia version is shy and soft spoken, an excellent administrator with the disturbing knowledge of her impending doom. The post-amnesia version is much more assertive but still finds herself in way over her head as she adjusts to life as a Rook on the Court of the Chequy. Both Myfanwy's are lovable and the first person narrative is full of wry wit.

Other members of the Court consist of: Gestalt, four bodies (three male and one female) all controlled by one hive mind. Heretic Gubbins, a contortionist whose body is seemingly made out of rubber. Eckhart, a soldier who can sculpt metal with his bare hands. Grantchester, an executive with the ability to release nerve gas from his pores. Alrich, a seductive creature of the night. Farrier, a woman who stalks the dreams of others. And Wattleman, who I regretfully forget what his power is. These characters are both wonderfully diverse and vastly interesting. My particular favorite is Gestalt because the idea of one mind controlling four bodies simultaneously and separately is just the coolest thing ever. One of these super-powered leaders of the most powerful secret society in existence is responsible for Myfanwy's amnesia and she must discover who and why.

Despite being a member of an organization that battles threats from mankind's darkest nightmares and possessing an extremely useful super-power of her own (the gift of control over other people's nervous systems by touch alone), Myfanwy is a glorified paper pusher. She is a bureaucrat and a darn good one at that. Not only must she adjust to a new life and conduct investigation into the traitor, but she is also responsible for the daily domestic affairs of the Chequy. The Chequy is an absurdly cool organization and I would love to see some of the action from the combat personnel but O'Malley does a superb job of infusing Myfanwy's occupation with action. Reading about Myfanwy conducting operations from her office is thrilling enough and when she finally does roll up her sleeves and gets some dirt (or fungus) on her hands it is even better.

The Chequy's long standing enemies, the Grafters are equal parts disturbing and awesome. A scientific brotherhood of fleshcrafters get an A+ for originality. The threat the Grafters pose is substantial and despite all the danger and suspense O'Malley layers in copious amounts of humor. There is one paragraph listing all sorts of supernatural horrors that had me laughing all the way through. The Rook is a sort of meta-book, much in the way that The Cabin in The Wood is a movie that encompasses the whole of the horror genre. The Rook is one half homage, one half spoof, and one half evolution of the genre. Don't check my math on that.

It goes without saying (because I've been drooling in affection for the last seven paragraphs) that The Rook is an amazing novel. Fun and imaginative, O'Malley has written an instant classic. The ending remains my only complaint, once again I have come across a sort of anti-climax, but don't let that prevent you from buying this one. O'Malley has a bright future paved in gold and I simply cannot wait for the next Chequy novel. The Rook is the best book I've read all year, go buy it.

Little x-men, dash of buffy, and a whole lotta awesome

I picked this book up on a whim while at the bookstore. Just seemed really interesting. Once I started reading I didn't want to put it down. There is just enough humor to keep it from feeling overly stuffy and just enough intrigue to keep it from being overly fluffy. The idea of a secret spy agency that is designed to monitor the world's supernatural goings-on is not a new one, but the author takes it and makes it his own. There are definite parts of the book/plot that remind me of xmen, buffy the vampire slayer, xfiles, harry potter - but at the same time not in a bad way. The book melds all those together very well. It's a good read from start to finish. I look forward to reading more from this author!

Strange but useful

This book comprises a very thorough introduction to the Finite Element Method for diffusion-advection problems and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The authors' style is strange and often very bizarre but the subject is presented with full details. Many different weak forms of the Navier-Stokes equations are presented and compared. From a practical point of view one will find a great deal of recipes on what elements to use, different strategies on mesh generation, time integration, etc. One will also find a useful discussion on the advantages/disadvantages of FEM compared to some well established finite diffrences and finite volume methods for incompressible flows.

A must have for anyone willing to understand the subtelties of FEM

First of all, if you're looking for an "operational book" of FEM - the ones who have all the matrices and methods step-by-step - don't buy this one; choose Reddy - The finite element method in heat transfer and fluid dynamics instead. Or even Hughes - The Finite Element Method should attend your needs.

But this is a very special book, written for those who really want to understand the difficulties and advantages of the Finite Element Method. It makes very very nice comparisons to the so called Control Volume Finite Element Method (the approach currently implemented in Ansys CFX), and it does a very good job in convincing you to follow the finite element, instead of the finite volume school. It is many times funny - at least I cought myself laughing loudly about the audacity and informal way in which the author gives you arguments to shut the finite volume advocates mouth when they say that "FEM Methods aren't conservative". Get this book and you will know how to answer them !

A must have, to read in free time !

Originally published in 1935, this book contains 12 short stories, only half of which are about Lord Emsworth and his Blandings estate. The rest are a miscellany, most of which are told by Mr. Mulliner, the indefatigable liar of the Angler's Rest. Moreover, while British actor James Saxon's reading is certainly competent, it doesn't reach the levels of inspiration of such other Wodehouse readers as Jonathan Cecil and Frederick Davidson. For an author who wrote nearly 100 books, Wodehouse struck a pretty high average; however, not everything he wrote was unalloyed gold. Blandings Castle contains flecks of the noble metal but also a large enough proportion of base metals to cause one to pause before purchasing this volume. A Blandings collection

The ivied walls of Blandings Castle have seldom glowed as sunnily as in these wonderful stories – but there are snakes in the rolling parkland ready to nip Clarence, the absent-minded Ninth Earl of Emsworth, when he least expects it.

For a start the Empress of Blandings, in the running for her first prize in the Fat Pigs Class at the Shropshire Agricultural Show, is off her food �– and can only be coaxed back to the trough by a call in her own language. Then there is the feud with Head Gardener McAllister, aided by Clarence’s sister, the terrifying Lady Constance, and the horrible prospect of the summer f�te – twin problems solved by the arrival of a delightfully rebellious little girl from London. But first of all there is the vexed matter of the custody of the pumpkin.

Skipping an ocean and a continent, Wodehouse also treats us to some unputdownable stories of excess from the monstrous Golden Age of Hollywood.

Brilliant Tales From Blandings Castle And More

Reading P. G. Wodehouse is always a delight, and I love the six Blandings stories in "Blandings Castle And Elsewhere", particularly relishing "The Custody of the Pumpkin." I was likewise naturally fond of "Pig-Hoo-O-O-O-Ey!," "Company For Gertrude," and "Lord Emsworth and the Girl Friend." Interestingly these stories (along with "The Go-Getter") make up two thirds of season one of the recent "Blandings" television series. I was interested, incidentally, to see how the producers edited and combined the various stories to produce a highly satisfactory show, though nothing is as wry and amusing as the original Wodehouse version. I am constantly amused at the odd combinations of eccentric characters that Wodehouse brings to life at Blandings Castle, and I can't imagine a more satisfying collection of short fiction.

After the six Blandings installments, there is a Bobbie Wickham story, "Mr. Potter Takes a Rest Cure," which I also found deeply amusing and hilarious as the protagonist manipulates a cast of oddball characters in her own best interests with numerous peculiar twists and detours of all sorts along the way. The remaining five stories from "The Mulliners of Hollywood" series are interestingly written satirical pieces about the phoniness of Hollywood: I particularly liked the concepts of the "Nodder" (a person who nods appreciatively at the ideas of a studio boss,) and touches of whimsy such as the concept of "sandwiches of fate." I gave the collection four stars overall because while I love Wodehouse and Blandings in particular, I found the Mulliners stories not as enduringly funny, though if you prize satire you will likely adore them. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed all the stories but for my money no stories can possibly surpass the Blandings tales chronicling Clarence, the Ninth Earl of Emsworth and his prize pig, The Empress.

More Sweetness and Light from Wodehouse

They're here in force, the inimitable Wodehouse gallery, Lady Hermione, "her outstandingly beautiful daughter...with the brains of a peahen," Vee, and her cantankerous father, Colonel Wedge. A little later, to our exquisite relief, comic and emotional, the impious but Hon. Galahad, Gally, Threepwood, brother to the Lord of the Manor, Clarence, makes his welcome appearance to spread sweetness and light and chaos in the cause of young love.

Clarence's underappreciated son Freddie arrives from America with a stern commission to sell dog food, a task for which he is ably suited. There's bulky, bumbling Bill Lister, Blister to you, whose face sends newly minted millionaire Tipton Plimsoll, Freddie's American friend, into a miasma of terror every time he spots it, the face, that is, because he believes it is a spectral admonition to cease his, Tipton's, inebriate ways. By the way, Freddie's happily married while Tippy wants to be so with Vee, a result pleasing to all and yet well out of reach until the last few pages, and Blister wants to be so with lovely Prudence, a result pleasing to no one and yet well out of reach until the very last page.

Gally saves several days with ingenious schemes involving prize pigs in bedrooms and bilious beards on Blisters, and all the plots untwist and, as Gally puts it, "Everybody happy, loving young hearts united, nothing to worry about."

This Blanding novel stands out with brilliant, often hilarious turns of phrase peppering every page; Wodehouse's command of his beloved mother tongue was never so rife. The characterizations too are sharper than usual, especially the men's. This success is crucial since Freddie, Blister, and Tipton could easily have been rendered in one bland voice under a less miraculous pen. The same could be said of Col. Wedge, the Hon. Gally, and Lord Emsworth.

Quibbles? Sure. Gally too often finds himself reminded of a old chum from his ancient past, and the girls, while fun and winsome as always, are not defined as well as the boys. We know from characters like the indomitable Sally that the master is master indeed of young women whose pluck and sass can win over the coldest heart. The reader always awaits a woman of that caliber, and none is quite forthcoming here.

Still, a five-star book, since I interrupted my wife's reading with my laughter every time we sat down with our respective novels, only one of which was funny, though it was funny enough for both.

Terrific short stories from Wodehouse's prime

First, I have to admit that the title of this short story collection is misleading. You might think from the title that all of the stories are about the Earl of Emsworth (whose home is Blandings Castle). In fact, only 6 of the 12 stories are about the doings at Blandings; there is one Bobbie Wickham story and five Mulliner stories, all dealing with Hollywood. The Blandings stories are clearly a cut above the other six and this book would have been even better (better than five stars??) had all of the stories been about the eccentric Earl of Emsworth. Included is "Lord Emsworth and the Girl Friend," which is among my top three or four favorite Woodhouse stories. This collection was first published in 1935 and I assume the stories were written about that time. I think the 1920s and 1930s were the best decades of Wodehouse's long career and even the least of these 12 stories -- probably the Bobbie Wickham story -- is very good.

Although one of the other reviewers is quite critical of the five Mulliner/Hollywood stories, I think they are actually quite good. Wodehouse, like many other authors, spent time in Hollywood during this period. He didn't produce much and considered himself vastly overpaid for his meager output. Like many others in his situation he was taken aback by the profligacy of the studios in throwing enormous amounts of money employing multiple writers to work on a single screenplay, with many of the writers -- like Wodehouse himself -- having only a vague idea of what screenplay writing was all about. Wodehouse's take on all of this is reflected in these stories. The last story,"The Castaways," in particular, breaks away from reality to give an almost surrealist take on the absurdities of Golden Age Hollywood. I found it to be the best of the Mulliner stories in this volume and one of the best Mulliner stories that I have read.

If you are already familiar with Wodehouse, then I'm preaching to the choir. If you are not familiar with Wodehouse, this book will be a good test of whether you will like him because it's close to, if not quite the best, he has to offer.
