Trolling may be obscene, but, Phillips argues, it isn't all that deviant. Trolls' actions are born of and fueled by culturally sanctioned impulses -- which are just as damaging as the trolls' most disruptive behaviors.

Use This Book as a Tool

A tool for understanding trolls -- one of the most prominent and disturbing groups of people on the internet. An exhaustive study by Whitney Phillips exposes the roots of the troll space and follows trolling through its early, middle, and late iterations. Phillips explains the origins of many different memes and their importance to trolling, information which is useful in spotting and dealing with trolling behaviors online.

The main argument of the book is that trolls are irrevocably linked to mainstream culture, that they are an exaggerated instance of the worst of the mainstream --and the media in particular. Because of this, Phillips doesn't believe trolls can be stopped, not until massive cultural overhaul is made. She says herself that she's been accused of being an apologist for trolls, and it is true that the tone of the book sometimes skirts toward troll sympathizing. Though, overall it is still a very readable, and useable resource. A recommended read for anyone who wants to better understand the internet, especially its wicked underbelly (4chan /b/ specifically).

I found this book after reading the author's excellent op Ed about Donald Trump. The book didn't disappoint. It is a model for how to do rigorous and accessible scholarship on media, and I found it's underlying argument soberly compelling: troll space isn't the antithesis of mainstream American values, but an extreme expression of them. Anyone trying to understand the disturbing dynamic of American politics at present could benefit from this book.

This is a very interesting book. It charters the terrain to understand the problem of trolling, and it signals avenues to assess sound responses. PHENOMENAL!

This book was so damned good that it's difficult to release the characters hold on my mind and heart to even begin to start this review; but shake them I must because this book is too good not to write how great it is.

I have never been so torn in my life while reading a book, but Shakela has pulled out all the stops in this read she has penned. The people I started out liking, I began to dislike, the ones I hated, I began to love, the ones I was rooting for, I began to want them to separate. Through it all you were never left bereft of an emotional response. This author kept her reading audience in a captivated state. She imprisoned you within the confines of her creative imagination and did not leave it up to you when the release date would occur on your emotional bank of feelings. Oh no! Ms. James was the only one in possession to the keys to the jail by which she held you enthralled with the weaving of this uniquely told tale.

The bewitchment you will experience begins from the very first time you come to grips with the storyline she has so hypnotically written to mesmerize your senses. She does a continuous tap dance on your nervous system, causing you to shimmy and shake as if you have out your finger into an electrical socket. You will find yourself so enraptured with this novel that you cannot be drawn away by anything less than a catastrophe. This read is so riveting that you will not gain any type of normalcy until the last sentence has permeated and sunk into the very crevice of your soul. This author has aligned, and may even have surpassed, some of the best writers in the African American fiction genre, but this unique read does not limit itself to just us! No way! This read crosses all lines whether they are race, gender or otherwise; this unique writing crosses all barriers. Ms. James is pulling no punches and is hitting the writing scene with finesse and much panache.

Come along and join the roller coaster ride of a read that will have you entangled until you sit down and release the emotional tirade which will be written on the annals of your heart and mind for sometime to come. At the very least until this distinctive writer graces us with another enthralling e-book. I, for one, cannot wait until that time arrives.

Ms. James has separated herself from the pack with her first book right out the gate and now many will have to get better running shoes, in order to keep up.

P.S: I neglected to say that the artistic art cover is just as much responsible for my review as the great storyline. It grabs you before you read the synopsis or open the book. The creator is to be commended for his/her artistic genius. Great job!

WOW!!! Very emotional story

This book was just....WOW!!! I can't even... just, WOW!!! I came across this book while browsing Amazon for a book that didn't glorify thugs or drug dealers or make the side chick out to be the heroine. This was not about any of that. This book was about everyday people with problems that everyday people have in their own lives. I have a terrible habit of reading the reviews before I read a book that I'm interested in reading. One thing I can say about the readers is they didn't give the story away. They were tight lipped about this story. This book stirred quite a few emotions up while reading. Hell, I'm a grown ass man and I was on the verge of tears. All the characters were amazing and brought something different to the story. Whether you liked them or hated them, you have to admit that you couldn't wait to read what they were up to in the next chapter. Nina, I can't even begin to explain my disappoint in the way she carried herself as a wife. I wouldn't say I hated her, but I have a strong dislike for the way she treated Travis. Travis was a really good guy who loved his wife unconditionally. Unfortunately for him, that wasn't good enough for his selfish wife. Travis was too good for her. She even knew it. The decisions she made ended up costing her everything. Allie and Spade's relationship had issues that a lot of couples can relate to in their own relationship. My issue with Allie is what she did to get her "confidence" back. That was foul. There were always other options to find the confidence she'd lost in herself. The worse part about it all was she was careless about it and didn't have any regrets. Spade grew so much throughout the book. He knew his flaws and wanted badly to be a better man for Allie. He did the right thing to get himself together. I was really proud of him for doing what it took to be a better man for not only her, but for his children as well as for himself. In the beginning, I really disliked Chanel. She was the definition of a "slut". She didn't give a damn about the people she hurt. She knew what she was doing was wrong, but she really didn't care. Over the course of the book, she grew as a person as well as a friend. By the end, I was hoping that she actually had a happy ending. She came a long way. Oh, she still had that slick ass mouth, but she was a better person none the less. Sweetie's story in all this is too heartbreaking to even talk about. She was a lost soul. She was striped away of everything and all hope. ABUSE is real. Whether it's mentally, verbally or physical, it's a serious problem. This book covered every aspect of abuse. I'm glad I took a chance on reading this book because it was a story well told. Thank you for such a wonderful story.

Wow this was such a powerful read. Get ready for every emotion possible because that's exactly what this story evoked out of me. I loved Travis! He really loved and cared for his wife, friends, and family the way a man should. I hated his relationship with Nina though. I swear I wasn't feeling her from the beginning and those feelings never waivered. I did love Spade and Allie together. Noah and Sweeties relationship was pure tragedy. I found myself liking Chanel more and more as the book progressed. It was a really good story that made me really sad towards the end. Still in all a great read on the trials and tribulations of friendships and relationships, as well as lessons learned.

Good Job By The Author

I bought this book for use with TCPDF even though the author presents his work as primarily aimed at FPDF. The book covers about 99% of the functionality but there are enough code examples and explanations by the author to get you through almost any common usage of both FPDF and TCPDF. The 1% that he doesn't cover, you'll probably never use.

It's well done and author's explanations of his coding are easy to understand.

As Prune stood rooted to the spot, the rat ploughed gamely on through a dish of potatoes. Tripping over the salt cellar she knocked over a candelabra. Unable to stop, she pirouetted gracefully through Crispin’s loaded plate and landed in his lap along with most of his meal. There was a loud crash as both chair and man fell backwards. His heavy kilt and sporran flew upward presenting the table with a matching set of tartan boxer shorts. With a cluck of consternation, Prune finally cranked into action, throwing a well-aimed napkin over the offending underwear, which merely fuelled Crispin’s panic.
‘Get it off! Get it off!’ He was thrashing around dementedly on his back, stabbing down with a fork. Bits of fur flew in every direction. The rat however had already moved on and was making a break for it through the open dining-room doors. I let her go. This was far better sport. I pounced, and grabbing the object of Crispin’s attentions, ripped it off and thoroughly savaged his sporran."

Like Bruce Campbell and Elizabeth Lack's A Dictionary of Birds ( LJ 7/85), The Encyclopedia of Birds is superbly written, edited, and illustrated. Many of the same authors have written on the same subjects in both books. An important difference is that the Dictionary is arranged alphabetically, while the Encyclopedia is organized by taxonomic order. The Encyclopedia contains an index, but due to the sometimes confusing classification of birds, its format may still make it difficult to use. In addition, the Dictionary is more detailed and extensive, and includes references at the end of long definitions. But the Encyclopedia 's large color photographs, which are often strikingly beautiful, will be useful to both amateurs and professionals. While the Dictionary is a necessity for most academic libraries, both books are highly recommended to public libraries with large reference collections. Nicholas J. This book is just what it says, an encyclopedia.

This book is just what it says, an encyclopedia. I should have read up more on this book before I bought it. It is a good book, but not what I was looking for. Lot of reading and about birds all over the world. I was looking to identify birds around our area.

If Bird Watching Simply Isn't Enough For You

The problem with birding books is that they mostly just tell you what a given bird looks like. If your curiosity about feathered creatures goes beyond just appearances here is the book for you. It's a big, 450-page book that is packed with information. This is not just a big picture book, though it is full of beautiful color shots. It's mainly a reference book that describes, by species, birds' lives in detail, covering such topics as mating, nesting, communication, feeding, and socialization. There are many fascinating sidebars, such as the one describing why owls have such broad heads, and the one on the Hoatzin chick's claws on its wings that enable it to climb around trees while still an infant. There is excellent material on how various birds have developed features that have enabled them to adapt to their environment - probably the best know example being the beaks of finches.
And, best of all, this encyclopedia is interestingly written. It's informative, but not drearily academic. It's one of those books that you can just open up to any page and find yourself reading something truly fascinating about birds. Highly recommended.

Poorly organized.

There is a great deal of fascinating, and very useful information here, and if the writing style is a bit didactic, it's hardly soporific. Still, it would seem to me that an "encyclopedia" should be organized in some way (preferably alphabetically) that is comprehensible to the layman. Granted, there's a fairly good index that allows one to find the entry that one is looking for, but the book as a whole is apparently organized by order and suborder, which makes it impossible for the layman to pick up the book and find a given entry in a reasonable amount of time. This strikes me as a fairly serious flaw. For example, we start with ostriches, rheas, emus and cassowaries, progress through kiwis and tinamous, progress to penguins, loons, and grebes; hummingbirds are roughly halfway through the book, and we finish with crows. Jays have no entry of their own, but are lumped with crows, as sparrows are lumped with buntings, tanagers, waxbirds and weavers. It's very difficult to find the method to this madness.
Granted, three stars is a bit low for this book, but four would have been too high.
If you need a reference book on birds that has a lot of information, and are willing to spend the time sorting through the incomprehensible organization to find that information, this is an excellent choice, but if you want a quick "field guide" that not only gives good information but that is easy to use, this would be a bad choice.
