A very worthwhile read

Like many active homebrewers, I own a decent number of books on homebrewing and I have read them all cover-to-cover. These include all the well-known ones from Papazian (several), Palmer, Noonan, Daniels, etc. I am a scientist by trade, so I particularly enjoy digging into the technical chapters so that I can do all the brewing calculations myself using a pencil, paper, and my trusty HP calculator. I'm also a long-time listener to a number of homebrewing podcasts, and I eagerly anticipate the arrival of my Zymurgy and BYO magazines. There is very little you can teach me with regards to brewing processes or techniques that I have not heard about before. Although I would love to experiment more and learn for myself the pros and cons of various techniques, I brew infrequent enough that I have settled into a system that works for me. All that being said, this is a book I enjoyed reading and one I highly recommend for the wealth of information inside.

I purchased this book for exactly the reasons Gordon Strong lays out in the introduction: it tells you how and why Gordon Strong brews the way that he does. His credentials show that he has mastered homebrewing, so I was very interested to see if there were tips or procedures I could pick up that would improve my brew day and/or to improve my beer. He covers just about every angle from recipe formulation all the way through to packaging and shipping the beer off for competition. Every chapter either taught me something, reinforced an idea, or gave me something to think about.

The book is divided into three main sections: Philosophy, Mastering Your Craft, and Applying Your Knowledge. The Philosophy section, which is just one chapter long, talks about how to approach making beer and formulating your approach; how to find inspiration, draw on unrelated experiences, etc. The Mastering Your Craft section covers chapters on process, equipment, and ingredients. There is nothing inherently profound about any of the stuff here, but that isn't the point. You're not being taught what a base malt is, but how to evaluate it, how to taste it, how to think about using it. You're not being taught how to make a dark beer, but how to think about the different ways of using dark malts or steeping practices. The last section deals with tasting and evaluating your beer, looking for faults and fixing them, including a lengthy section on blending beers. There is also a very good chapter on brewing for competition, and preparing your beers for shipping to competitions.

Because of the personal focus of the book, it is written in the first person voice. The tone is conversational and never condescending. Often, such as when talking about various brewing techniques, he will describe all the different ways to do something (for example, if talking about mashing, he'll describe batch sparging, decoction, etc.), then he'll tell you which technique he would use in which particular situation. He is not locked into a particular way of doing things and will choose what he thinks works best for what he wants to accomplish.

The thing to keep in mind is that this is not an introductory book to teach you how to brew. As the title suggests, this is a book to tell you how to brew better beer. The book is written for all-grain brewers and it assumes the reader knows how to make beer. Some of the reviews here take issue with the fact that they didn't learn any new techniques, or that they weren't told what the best techniques to use are, like there is some special secret ingredient or piece of equipment that has been the reason for Strong's successes. I think this is missing the forest for the trees. This isn't a hand-holding book that promises you'll make better beer by using such-and-such kind of mash tun, with such-and-such kind of fermenter, etc. And yes, ultimately you need to figure out for yourself what techniques or ingredients works best for you on your equipment. This book delivers exactly what it promises: it shows you how Gordon Strong approaches making beer and tries to point out the tools and approaches you can use. It is best summed up in his own words (p. 26): "...I will try to lead you through the decision process and discuss some of the choices I have made in developing a personal brewing style. The goal isn't to have you emulate how I brew, but to use how I brew to help you develop your own way of brewing."

My only gripe is stylistic and not one for which I'd ding the book. At various places in-line are side bar type of material that contains a recipe or some kind of brief discussion on a topic. The beginning and end of these pieces are delineated well with horizontal lines. However, the text in these regions switches from a serif to a sans-serif font (the book doesn't have a colophon, so I can't tell you what the specific fonts are) that I find uncomfortable to read. I think that it would have worked much better if these regions were delineated with a change in the background color, or with a switch to a different font than the one chosen.

Ultimately, the best way to become a master brewer is to brew a lot and learn from your own experiences. I'm not going to make any grandiose statements that this book is like sitting with Siddartha on a spiritual journey into making beer, but I got a lot out of this book and some good ideas for things I want to try on my system.

Enjoyed the Read

This book is not for everyone. Read the first 10 or so pages and you should have a good idea if it's for you or not. This book feels more like Gordon is sitting down with you and having a conversation than helping you with your brewing. Are there books that do a better job explaining the basics of brewing? Yes. Are there books out there that do a better job at explaining the science of brewing? Yes. There are definitely better books for homebrewing out there. I own some. But Gordon's book really helped me to look at my brewing and make some changes, to figure out where I want to take my brewing, and to set goals for myself. This is not a beginner's book. This is not a book for a beer geek. This is a book for someone that has been brewing for a while and is looking at competition brewing or to better their brewing by seeing what someone does and thinks. I really enjoyed this book.

Wasn't sure but bit anyway, and like what I tasted.

I read the reviews and was torn about ordering the book based on several of the rants against it. After reading about half the book, and browsing the rest to get an idea of all that it had to offer, I am glad I bought it. I have already incorporated some of the tips given in the book into my brewing.

I've been brewing for about 20 years, 7 of it all grain. I brew on average twice a month, sometimes more. I have single tier three vessel system. I am a scientist by training, but to be honest, I never thought of my brewing from a "process" viewpoint, until I read the book. I am at that stage in my brewing where I am focusing more on improving my beer, rather than seeking out new methods or techniques. The book offers those kind of insights. The author gets you thinking about beer and your brewing from a different perspective. He emphasizes that no two brewers make beer the same way, which is very true and is amply demonstrated if you belong to a brewclub. Homebrewers can all make great beer on their variety of systems: the book helps you think in a way to maximize your system to make the most of what you have and the processes that you have adopted. It offers alternatives, and shows the up and down sides of them all, so the brewer can decide if he has made the right choice for him.

It is a shame that I almost missed out on this book due to a few petty reviews, that in hindsight seem more like bulletin board rants, by know it alls with brewpot envy. Guys, please go get yourself a 15 gallon Blichman and get rid of the little 5 gallon enameled pot, then maybe you won't be so sour on life and can move on.

The book was never meant to be a book on beer design, or a how to book which is what the harshest critiques are comparing it to. I mean, Pappizan's book, really? Really? It was good for its day, but is about 20+ years old and can hardly be considered relevant to anyone but a rank beginner. This book delivered on what it was meant to be, a thought provoking discussion. It reminds me of my days as a martial arts instructor, students would go through the motions, master the katas, but it was only when they start to think in terms of it as a systemic art, do they make that leap from someone just making a bunch of dance like movements to someone who could effortlessly move from one technique to the next without so much as thinking about it.

If you are serious about homebrewing and want more than just a "how to" book, this book is for you.

About the Author
The first play in D. C. Jackson's 'Stewarton Trilogy' for Borderline Theatre Company, The Wall, won the Best Ensemble at the 2007-8 Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland and was shortlisted for the Saltire Society/ Royal Mail Scottish First Book of the Year Award. It was followed by The Ducky in 2009. The Chooky Brae completed the trilogy in 2010. My Romantic History was staged earlier in the same year by the Bush Theatre and Sheffield Crucible. He has also had short plays produced by Oran Mor (Matinee Idle, Drawing Bored, Out on the Wing and Company Policy) and the Arches Theatre Company (Hello, part of Spend a Penny). He is working on new plays for BBC Radio 4, the National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Court, and was the Pearson Writer in Residence at the Royal Court for 2008.

Rechnungslegungsstandards zu bilanzieren, wird es immer schwieriger Jahresabschl�sse,
die nach unterschiedlichen Systemen erstellt wurden, objektiv zu beurteilen.
Unterschiede im Ansatz und in der Bewertung von einzelnen Bilanzposten in den verschiedenen
Rechnungslegungssystemen, lassen die Erfolgs- und Ertragslage eines Unternehmens
in unterschiedlichem Licht erscheinen, soda� die Aussagekraft des Jahresabschlusses f�r den
Bilanzadressaten, sofern er nicht mit den jeweils angewandten Bilanzierungsregeln vertraut
ist, nur sehr beschr�nkt ist.
Der bilanziellen Behandlung des Gesch�ftswertes kommt hier besondere Bedeutung zu, da
er in vielen Konzernbilanzen zu den wichtigsten Aktivposten geh�rt und nicht selten einen
gro�en Teil des bilanzierten Eigenkapitals eines Unternehmens ausmacht. So betrug beispielsweise
bei EM TV der Goodwill 1476,30 Mio. Euro bei einem Eigenkapital von 829,80
Mio. Euro, was eine Quote Goodwill/Eigenkapital von 178% ausmacht. Oder im Fall des
Softwareunternehmens Intershop, bei dem ende 1999 der B�rsenwert um 20370% �ber seinem
Buchwert lag. Was bedeutet, da� nur ein halbes Prozent seines Marktwertes durch
Kapital gedeckt war1. Die zahlreich auftretenden Fusions- und Akquisitionsaktivit�ten der
letzten Jahre und der Aufstieg und Fall des Neuen Marktes, haben den Goodwill wieder verst�rkt
ins Bewu�tsein der Manager und Anleger ger�ckt. Durch das immer weitere Auseinanderfallen
von Ertragswert einer Unternehmung und der Summe ihrer Substanzwerte ist
der Goodwill zu einem zentralen Thema bei �bernahmeverhandlungen und der Berichterstattung
dar�ber geworden. So betrug der Gesch�ftswert bei der Fusion von Daimler-
Chrysler zum Beispiel 60 Mrd. DM , bei der �bernahme von Mannesman durch Vodafone
machte er sogar 350 Mrd. DM2 aus.
Da aber der deutsche Gesetzgeber, das International Accounting Standards Committee
(IASC) und das Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) unterschiedlicher Ansicht
sind dar�ber, wie der Goodwill nun in der Bilanz zu behandeln und vor allem zu bewerten
sei, ist es bei einer derart zentralen Gr��e unerl��lich sie im Zusammenhang mit dem jeweilig
angewandten Rechnungslegungsstandard zu betrachten. [...]

For Nubiologists, church historians and scholars of late antiquity the story of this ancient African civilization and its conversion to Christianity has been primarily understood as an addendum to Greco-Roman classical antiquity thereby positioning ancient Nubia during late antiquity as a passive receptacle of culture as opposed to a historical actor emerging through the cultural anteriority of its own religious traditions. Ancient Nubia was at once a Nile Valley and Sudanic civilization. Its history extended beyond the founding of Dynastic Egypt and Napatan-Meroitic Kush and equally significant, is the fact that long after ancient Egypt had been subdued by the Ptolemies and Rome, ancient Nubian civilization continued to thrive in late antiquity as an independent kingdom, first as a classical pharaonic culture and then as a Christian polity until the 15th century. The Roots of Nubian Christianity Uncovered: The Triumph of The Last Pharaoh: answers the questions: how and why did ancient Nubia convert to Christianity during the 4th 6th century CE? The book demonstrates that it is no longer acceptable to argue that Nubia converted to Christianity in the sixth century CE due to Byzantine Missions, but that a little known monarch, the Nubian king Silko who ruled in the 5th century inaugurated the beginnings of Christianity in ancient Nubia. King Silko was in fact the Last Pharaoh in the Nile Valley and the first Christian king of Medieval Nubia. The Nubian Pharaoh Silko was to ancient Nubia what Constantine was to Rome and the legend of King Arthur was to Britain, a founding Christian monarch and a transitional historical figure. Nubian sovereign religion in the fifth century CE was an amalgamation of Classical Sudanese and Egyptian traditions, Meroitic imperial culture, Christian traditions indigenous to Coptic Egypt, and Roman military piety. By utilizing contemporary African and African diaspora religions and applying methods that are traditionally employed in contemporary studies of conversion in Africa and the African Diaspora The Roots of Nubian Christianity Uncovered highlights the themes of cultural complexity and multiple religious identities in late antique Nubia. About the Author
SALIM FARAJI is Associate Professor and Chair of Africana Studies at California State University, Dominguez Hills. He completed his Master of Divinity at the Claremont School of Theology and M.A. and PhD at Claremont Graduate University. He is a member of the International Society for Nubian Studies and specializes in early Christian history, Africana and Africanist historiography, Coptic Studies and the Sudanic, Napatan, Meroitic and Medieval periods of Nubian history. Professor Faraji is a contributor to the Encyclopedia of African Religion and the Oxford Dictionary of African Biography and is co-author of The Origin of the Word of the Amen: Ancient Knowledge the Bible Has Never Told and The Plan: A Guide for Women Raising African American Boys from Conception to College.

History Cannot Be Buried Anymore

This book is powerful and infomatiive. It is very helpful that the person who who the booo is believer in the Messiah but goes to great lengths to expose the hidden history of African people and how christianity was hijacked by non-African peoples to substantiate slavery. He does an excellant job of filling in missing pieces of history that I've question my whole life. You may not agree with everything he writes but you can't ignore history and once it is exposed to readers, you have no choice but to go on a trek to search for yourself concerning the facts to discover the myths put forth as facts. Research is the key.

Marino's ICU Book has remained one of the most accessible and comprehensive intensive care resources available. The 3rd version, however, was woefully out of date -- until now. The 4th edition is fully updated, features colored illustrations and photographs, and offers a searchable online-version of the text for use with your iPad/smartphone/etc.

Despite owning a library of critical care texts, I won't often find myself reaching for my copy of Vincent's Critical Care again. This is an indispensable resource for medical students, residents, fellows, attendings, Pas and critical care RNs, etc. More than just a technical manual, it is often insightful, whimsical, and poignant. There are very few medical references that you can sit down with and actually read recreationally, but this is one of them.

Best book ever

Everyone laughs when I tell them how this is the best book I've ever bought. I'm not kidding, if you do any sort of critical care work (ground or air transport, ICU, sick med-surg patients etc) you should definitely buy this book. The fact that you get the full, searchable version on inkling is amazing. I use this to look up all sorts of crazy patient conditions in flight, double-check medications or treatment plans, and just to get laughs. The author is SO good at making difficult concepts very easy to understand. A few of my coworkers have bought this as well. Buy the paper version to read, then install the Ebook version to use as a reference while working. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Fantastic book! Easy to read, with all the necessary and important information.
A couple of things outdated but you can't ask in a book a 100% up to date information. The application for tablet and phone is by far the best feature of all! I never get caught without knowing at least something during ICU shifts.

SAVE YOUR MARRIAGE--SAVE YOUR RELATIONSHIP--

I heard about the CD's which appeared on Oprah's List of Good Things for some year in the past. I now see that the CD's are also a book. If the book is a good as the CD's, which it must be, I think the author's ideas and methods about making your relationship with your significant other work well are WONDERFUL!

There is a CD series and book, LIGHT HER FIRE and a CD series and book LITE HIS FIRE. You need both! She is GOOD! And, either the book or the CD's are a bargain---just think how much a marriage counsellor or, worse yet, a divorce costs!

I recommend this book and the CD's VERY MUCH! boland7214@aol

this is an awesome and anointed book

This is an awesome and very anointed book...it is a very timely needed message for the Church, who does not recognize the danger that they are in for manufactering the anointing..fabricating the anonting...prophesing in their flesh..all of these things are talked about in the scriptures as WITHCRAFT...and the God-given command that we have as believers that we are NOT to ignore this problem but are to face it with God-given boldness and to intercede for the vessels of God to return to their right-standing with God in rightousness, and to turn from their deception...This anonted message needs to be taken to the four corners of the Church and it needs to be heeded!!!

"Expertise in biblical Greek" is questionable

The cover of the book states: "Rick Renner is a highly respected Bible teacher who effectively combines his expertise in biblical Greek with the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit." Despite Renner's likely good intentions to warn the Church about false and dangerous teachings and teachers, I questioned this claim of "expertise in biblical Greek" when I found many glaring errors and misstatements about "the Greek" throughout the book. I even sent my critique to Renner, and he telephoned me to discuss it, but did not (perhaps could not?) rebut or refute my criticisms. Renner continues to send his ministry supporters and fans "Sparkling Gems from the Greek" as part of a daily e-mail (available upon request from his Web site), and these "gems" contain the same kinds of errors. This book does NOT demonstrate "expertise in biblical Greek" and neither do his daily "Sparkling Gems." For information about the meaning of the Greek, I would advise you to look elsewhere. If you continue to think that Renner exhibits "expertise in biblical Greek," I have a simple test for you: Subscribe (on his Web site) to his daily "Sparkling Gems." After you've received about 2 dozen of them, print them out and take them to a New Testament Greek professor at a nearby seminary, or a friend or pastor you know who has had several years of schooling or reading in NT Greek, and ask his or her opinion of Renner's statements. You'll have your answer and you won't have to take my word alone for this. And, considering his "expertise in biblical Greek" is questionable, readers should also hold up to careful scrutiny the non-Greek-related statements Renner makes.

Stout" writes about me and my review: "Please disregard the hateful comments made below by a couple religious Pharisees who have been brainwashed at some unmentioned cemeteries (a.k.a. seminaries). 85%+ of the salvations and probably 98% of the healings and deliverances that we are seeing in the Church today are taking place in charismatic Christian churches. Don't let these religious fundamentalists, with twisted approaches to Greek study, discourage you. Press on and continue to endure the persecution that you are going to receive from people like them!"

For your and Mr. Stout's information, I am not a Fundamentalist, but a full-blown Charismatic, and have been one for 28 years, and in Charismatic Churches for over 25 years. I believe in salvations, healings and deliverances, and rejoice when they occur. I was present and involved in the early moving of the "Toronto Blessing" in the Dallas Metroplex churches, and have seen and heard many of the major players (K.C. Prophets, et al). As I noted above, I had email exhanges and telephone conversations with the author about his Greek teachings. Mr. Stout is misrepresenting me. Again, take my test: subscribe for free to Renner's "Greek teachings" and then take a couple weeks' worth to a Greek prof or teacher (Charismatic if you like) and get his or her opinion - then you will be able to make an INFORMED decision.]

This book is a little dated, and comes from an awkward perspective, since most of the contributors are from the UK. On the front of the book, a British professor is quoted, saying that this is a book that every student of American Studies should have on their shelf. I would disagree. Although the perspective lacks much of the preconceived and overused cliches that exist in many American classrooms, it also lacks a passion for America that it deserves. There were times I felt as though the writers were competing to see who could use the most polysyllabic words in one sentence. Isn't brevity the soul of wit? Tell that to the contributors of this book. The only one of them that seems to understand that is a woman, writing about women's issues in America. Her chapter was by far the best of the bunch. Personally, I'm happy to be finished reading it.

Lehrer Distinguished� Chair in Water Engineering in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering and Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. He holds a B.Tech degree from U.P. University of Agriculture and Technology, a Master’s Degree from the University of Guelph, �a Ph.D. from Colorado State University, and a D.Sc. from the University of the Witwatersrand. One of today’s leading experts in the field of hydrology, Dr. Singh specializes in surface water hydrology, groundwater hydrology, hydraulics, irrigation engineering, environmental quality, and water resources. He has published 24 books and has edited over 55 books, published hundreds of journal articles, and has been the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hydrologic Engineering, ASCE, and is on the editorial boards of numerous journals.

An excellent successor (updated, revised and expanded) to the original 1964 Handbook of Hydrology by Ven Te Chow. Will serve as a primary reference, and deserves to be on the bookshelf (real or digital) of any practitioner in the area of hydrology and water resources.
