Not Just A Child's Book

A # 1 story of pioneer ingenuity existing in extreme cold (- 40 degrees), without food (wheat gone, few potatoes), no coal for heating (slow burning twisted hay all that is available), and no outside support (attempts to open a cut in the rail line failed time and again) of a small town on the rail head in Minnesota when the train from Chicago could not get through for months. Two young men, willing to die for the community hear rumors of a farmer wintering over 20 to 40 miles south of town, hitch their horses to wagon sleds at 3 AM and start out. After 20 miles one says, "How far will we go?" to the answer, "Until we find wheat." They see a lone tree, good sign, later see smoke, a better sign. The farmer is not willing to sell, he needs it for spring planting. The boys point out that they are giving three times the price and free shipping. On the way home a sled falls into a depression, several times, turning over and dumping the 120 pound bags. Bitter cold, feeling lost in hands and feet, the afternoon stars are obliterated by a blizzard coming behind them.

Amazing story of teen age Laura Ingalls teaching in a small school with few students 20 miles from home. I see the 20-40 below wind chill in ND and Minnesota, and think of our pioneers, and how they with internal, Godly strength, made it. Great read.

A Wonderful Read!!!

This books storyline had me hooked from beginning to end and I devoured it. I loved the fact that I was reading a factual story written by Laura Ingalls Wilder herself telling how her and her family went through a long and very hard winter that occurs like once every 21 years. Blizzard after blizzard hits that last 3-4 days at a time and the pattern goes on for months. The snow is so deep its higher than the door openings. The house is freezing cold except for around the fireplace that's heated with the only provision available, straw that Pa and Laura twist into "logs" to put in the fireplace. Their food supply slowly dwindles and the family is forced to ration what they have left in order to survive because the train bringing food and provisions is buried on the tracks the next town over and even though Pa and other townfolk hike down the tracks to try and shovel it free, they come close but have to quite and hurry home because another blizzard hits and buries the train again. This book is a fabulous read for people of all ages. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Listen to a classic

I grew up on the Little House books and still like to go back and reread them occasionally, for their wisdom, their entertainment value and for their glimpses of a long gone lifestyle. I picked up a couple of them in audiobook form and decided to listen to one the other day. Over all, the books hold up well in audio format. Some events take on a different color or emphasis when you listen to them, as opposed to reading the words on a page. Almanzo and Cap's journey to find the wheat was especially exciting from that standpoint. These would be wonderful family listening while on a road trip or at bedtime. My only objection was with the reader. She's okay when she's just reading the book, but when she tries to "sing" (and there is a surprising amount of music in the Little House books), especially when she's singing as "Pa", it's almost unbearable. She has perhaps the most unmelodic voice I've ever heard. I found myself turning down the volume until the song was over. Otherwise, I highly recommend the audio version of these books.

Good book for anyone who likes to experiment with glazes, trying to get the most out of glazes takes a lot of effort. I work with a lot of cone 6 commercial matte glazes and it always takes a little tweaking to get a great result. This book has a few helpful ideas for the dedicated glaze master.

While innovation may be the lifeblood of technology based industry, it does not guarantee success to the individual firm within it. The ability to bring useful and desirable products to market in a timely, cost-effective fashion requires the unique talents of managers armed with an arsenal of modern principles and methodologies specifically geared to the technology invention and innovation process. But even in technology based firms, many managers have only scant technical background, while scientists and engineers may have little or no management training. And courses on managing technology based firms are currently taught only in a meager handful of universities. This book grew out of Michael J. C. Martin's experiences developing and teaching courses in managing technological innovation-entrepreneurship to business, engineering, and science students. It provides a dynamic framework within which managers from virtually any professional background can develop efficient, highly productive work systems guaranteed to maximize a high-tech firm's competitive edge. Throughout, the emphasis is on leveraging a company's strategic advantage. Libro fundamental para la gesti�n de la innovaci�n....

Aunque el libro es del '94, y para el ritmo de cambios que se produce en las empresas de alta-tecnolog�a (tanto en los modos de gesti�n como en el uso de las tecnolog�as), este libro es un cl�sico.

Para m� es un cl�sico, no solamente porque es de los pocos que tratan el tema de la gesti�n de la innovaci�n, ciertamente escurridizo, sino porque aborda el tema de una manera muy cient�fica y detallada. Quiz�s, sea justamente esta tambi�n una carencia, la multitud de datos asociados a las opiniones de diferentes autores (cada cap�tulo tiene una larga lista de referencias) llega a desbordar y hacer perder la idea fundamental que se transmite.

Viendo otros t�tulos del mismo tema (Making Innovation Work) que tratan el tema de una manera m�s organizada, se puede comprobar que los enfoques que ahora se proponen como novedosos, est�n perfectamente apuntados, incluso detallados (y con m�s figuras que lo explican incluso mejor) que los actuales.

En cualquier caso, extra�a que sobre un tema tan esencial para el futuro de occidente que fundamentalmente sobrevivir� con una correcta gesti�n de la innovaci�n y el capital intelectual, haya tan poca literatura (y buena) que cubra este tema. Por suerte, la aproximaci�n que ofrece este libro es de las mejores que existen.

"Making Innovation Work" ofrece una visi�n bastante m�s en la l�nea del "How-to". Con una redacci�n m�s asequible una mejor estructura en la exposici�n.

About the Author
Andrew Rex has been Professor of Physics at the University of Puget Sound since 1982. He frequently teaches the Modern Physics course, so he has a deep sense of student and instructor challenges. He is the author of several textbooks, including "Modern Physics," "Essential College Physics," and "Integrated Physics and Calculus." In addition to textbook writing, he studies foundations of the second law of thermodynamics, which has led to the publication of several papers and the widely acclaimed book, "Maxwell's Demon: Entropy, Information, Computing."

Richard Wolfson is Professor of Physics at Middlebury College.

Finally a textbook that fits the number of chapters you can actually cover in a semester

I love this textbook.

Essential College Physics has 26 chapters, which means I can run my students through 13 chapters per semester. With our standard college semester of 15 weeks + a finals' week, that leaves me a week or two for review as well as a couple of in class exams instead of trying to rush through 32 or more chapters in a semester and feeling like we never had time to breathe, OR cutting out the last chapters on nuclear and particle physics, which so often happens.

This text runs through the material in a straight forward and conceptual way that is well-suited for my premed students. The goals are well set at the beginning of the chapter, the pertinent equations are well marked in the text and in the summary at the end of the chapter. The problems at the end of the chapter are well suited to the level I need to have my students understand at... namely aiming for student MCAT proficiency as well as a strong student conceptual understanding of the basic principles of physics.

Each chapter runs around 20 pages or so, a reasonable amount for students to read per week on their own.

What I particularly like about this thext is that it is simple and not distracting with ancillary material for the students to plow through, which detracts rather than adds to the already demanding core materials, which the class must cover. So many College Physics texts have (well-meaning) exciting bunny trails and boxes and links to internet videos, etc at the margins of the text, and I find my students do not finish reading the actual core of the chapter. Also, there is so much material in those other texts that my students get confused and forget what the chapter is really about. This book is a simple read straight-through.

To the gentleman student who posted a review prior to mine, let me just insert that without an instructor who can adequately explain and conceptually make physics alive to students, physics is a difficult subject to do well in, REGARDLESS of the textbook. Physics should be taught by a qualified instructpor and supported by an excellent textbook like Rex and Wolfson's. It is the rare student, who succeeds at College level physics with a textbook alone.

Pressure Cooker Recipes

This is such an interesting book. I downloaded it to my kindle the other day, for my wife. I never realized how many recipes there were for a pressure cooker. Also, how much healthier it is to prepare food using this method. Last night, my wife prepared our first recipe, sweet and sour ribs, delicious.
