Boring workbook

This workbook is not a winner. I really like the Kumon workbooks for my little ones (2 and 4), but this one is very boring. There isn't much variety in the activities...only a connect-the-dots on one page and a color-by-number on the next, on and on and on. My 4 year old's hand gets tired from all that coloring and she does't even want to finish the color pages...this is a child who loves to color and do workbooks. Not worth it in my opinion.

Not as good as the other Kumon books for my 3-year-old

My almost 4-year old LOVED the Kumon mazes and cutting books (and has been badgering me for more). In this Numbers 1-30 book the activities consist of either coloring in certain numbered shapes to reveal an image (i.e., color all #1's yellow, all 2's blue, etc) or joining numbered dots in order to reveal an image.

He likes the numbered dots pages just fine but refuses to do the other side (the 2 types of activities face each other across the page) because he's just not that into coloring. Kids who like to color in large parts of a page should really enjoy this activity, but it bores him to tears. So a caveat for the parents of the non-coloring kids among you: you'll waste half the book.

I love this book, great introduction to SUSY

I love this book. I had written that there were some sign mistakes, but, it was me who was confused about the signs (as I realize now after being more careful with the signs). I apologize about my previous review. Spinor fields are Grassmann-valued, in Physics (having to do with the spin-statistics theorem). Also when you use the superspace approach, you introduce extra fermionic type coordinates. The reason why these are introduced is that they allow one to work with commutators, instead of anticommutators, the former being more familiar (from the theory of Lie algebras).

Back to the book, I think it is a great place for mathematicians and physicists to start, in order to understand supersymmetry. The book focuses on d=4 and N=1, which is perfect to start. The book is rather mathematical, in character. Some might complain that it is perhaps too formal, but I feel that without knowing how the yoga of supersymmetry works, in detail, it is probably difficult, if not impossible, to get a sound understanding of this concept.

In all, I highly recommend this book, although it would be also useful to simultaneously look at some other sources. Arxiv contains several good introductions to supersymmetry for instance. I believe it is wise to also look at these more recent sources simultaneously.

Classic intro to SUSY

This book is the classic introduction to superfields. It is very elegant an formal, and appeals to the more mathematically minded particle physics student. It contains almost nothing on phenomenological applications of supersymmetry, and keeps it's hands clean by avoiding messy but important topics, such as regularization of supersymmetric gauge theories.

Necessary but not sufficient

This is one of those books that is still around because
it fills a niche that no modern book has been able
to fill. It introduces N=1 susy quickly and concisely.
The reader must work through every equation in order
to get something out of this book. The reason why people
continue to use this book of equations is because the
equations are right. If you try other books, they are
filled with typos and sometimes even more serious errors.
Get through the first 8 chapters of this book
may be chapter 22 and 24 then get into Argyres' notes
that delve into the modern aspects of supersymmetric
quantum field theory.

Mistakeful Guide

I wouldn't buy this guide if I was you because this guide has an awful lot of mistakes. For the people that would like to buy a Pokemon Game Guide, may I suggest that you buy the one from Nintendo Power because Pokemon games came from Nintendo Not Prima. For the people that bought the guide, I'll type the mistakes I found for you.

#1: Pg.4: In the pokeball section, it says that you can get a master ball from both Hideouts but you can only get it from Team Aqua's Hideout.

#2: Pg.23: In the section of Route 102 via Pokemon Appearances in Water, there's a Rare Surskit in the water but you can only get a Surskit in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. (See Pokedex for this)

#3: Pg.25: Do you see the room of Norman's Gym? Well, where it show's the second-left, they forget to draw a door and in the 4th two visted rooms, the right room should have been in the left instead of the right.

#4: Pg.41: See that high road? There's a white spot on its road.

#5: Pg.70: The Safari Zone. Why doesn't it show the full map of the new area after beating the Elite Four?

#6: Pg.78: Why doesn't it show the map of Team Aqua's Hideout?

#7: Pg.99: They say that Latias/Latios are encountered randomly on the grass but they can sometimes be encountered by surfing.

#8: Pg.104: It shows that Steven has A Matagross that's Lv58 but it's at Lv78.

#9: Pg.107: See two images of the Battle Factory? The right image is incorrect.

#10: Pg.178: The Pokemon Corpish, it's says that you can catch one in Petalburg City but Corpish isn't in that city.

#11: Pg.236: It says that you can get a master ball in Team Magma's Hideout but The master ball is at Team Aqua's Hideout.

Overall it was an ok guide; but the gym leader, elite 4, and pokedex was a little lacking. I also wanted to know about the jhoto and kanto pokes. I mean, if you get a national pokedex you want to know about alllllllll the pokemon not just the new ones.

This guide is pretty good but has some errors.For Example:It says the gym leader Brawly is a Flying Type Trainer,and says to use fighting or psychic type moves against him-This is wrong-Brawly is a Fighting type trainer,and can be beated by Flying or psychic type moves.Overall this book is pretty helpful,it has item locations,tm moves and hm move locations.But it also lacks all 386 pokemon.It lists only 202 out of the 386 pokemon.

About the Author
Lisa A. Urry

Lisa Urry (Chapter 1 and Units 1, 2, and 3) is Professor of Biology and Chair of the Biology Department at Mills College in Oakland, California, and a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating from Tufts University with a double major in biology and French, Lisa completed her Ph.D. in molecular and developmental biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program. She has published a number of research papers, most of them focused on gene expression during embryonic and larval development in sea urchins. Lisa has taught a variety of courses, from introductory biology to developmental biology and senior seminar. As a part of her mission to increase understanding of evolution, Lisa also teaches a nonmajors course called Evolution for Future Presidents and is on the Teacher Advisory Board for the Understanding Evolution website developed by the University of California Museum of Paleontology. Lisa is also deeply committed to promoting opportunities for women and underrepresented minorities in science.

Michael L. Cain

Michael Cain (Units 4, 5, and 8) is an ecologist and evolutionary biologist who is now writing full-time. Michael earned a joint degree in biology and math at Bowdoin College, an M.Sc. from Brown University, and a Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology from Cornell University. As a faculty member at NEW! Mexico State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, he taught a wide range of courses, including introductory biology, ecology, evolution, botany, and conservation biology. Michael is the author of dozens of scientific papers on topics that include foraging behavior in insects and plants, long-distance seed dispersal, and speciation in crickets. Michael is also the lead author of an ecology textbook.

Steven A. Wasserman

Steve Wasserman (Unit 7) is Professor of Biology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He earned his A.B. in biology from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in biological sciences from MIT. Through his research on regulatory pathway mechanisms in the fruit fly Drosophila, Steve has contributed to the fields of developmental biology, reproduction, and immunity. As a faculty member at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and UCSD, he has taught genetics, development, and physiology to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. He currently focuses on teaching introductory biology. He has also served as the research mentor for more than a dozen doctoral students and more than 50 aspiring scientists at the undergraduate and high school levels. Steve has been the recipient of distinguished scholar awards from both the Markey Charitable Trust and the David and Lucille Packard Foundation. In 2007, he received UCSD’s Distinguished Teaching Award for undergraduate teaching.

Peter V. Minorsky

Peter Minorsky (Unit 6) is Professor of Biology at Mercy College in New York, where he teaches introductory biology, evolution, ecology, and botany. He received his A.B. in biology from Vassar College and his Ph.D. in plant physiology from Cornell University. He is also the science writer for the journal Plant Physiology. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Peter taught at Kenyon College, Union College, Western Connecticut State University, and Vassar College. His research interests concern how plants sense environmental change. Peter received the 2008 Award for Teaching Excellence at Mercy College.

Jane B. Reece

The head of the author team for recent editions of CAMPBELL BIOLOGY, Jane Reece was Neil Campbell’s longtime collaborator.� Earlier, Jane taught biology at Middlesex County College and Queensborough Community College. She holds an A.B. in biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. Jane’s research as a doctoral student and postdoctoral fellow focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Besides her work on the Campbell textbooks for biology majors, she has been an author of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Campbell Essential Biology, and The World of the Cell.

Neil A. Campbell

Neil Campbell (1946–2004) combined the investigative nature of a research scientist with the soul of an experienced and caring teacher. He earned his M.A. in zoology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. in plant biology from the University of California, Riverside, where he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001. Neil published numerous research articles on desert and coastal plants and how the sensitive plant (Mimosa) and other legumes move their leaves. His 30 years of teaching in diverse environments included introductory biology courses at Cornell University, Pomona College, and San Bernardino Valley College, where he received the college’s first Outstanding Professor Award in 1986. He was a visiting scholar in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. Neil was the lead author of�Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections,�Campbell Essential Biology, and�CAMPBELL BIOLOGY.

This is the best biology textbook I had ever read

This is the best biology textbook I had ever read. I am a medical doctor, I have a degree in biology, my twin girls are taking biology in college and asked me to tutor them. I was so impressed with this textbook I bought one for myself. It is very well written, the concepts were easy to understand and the extra in-depth explanations and quizzes provided excellent reinforcement of the information being taught. I highly recommend this textbook.

A fun intro to genetics

Another great overview/intro to a weighty subject by Mr. Gonick, who holds a degree in math from Harvard. I'm a substitute teacher, and use his books to give me a grounding in various subjects. I find many of the teachers I sub for are familiar with his book on their subject, and respect it.
He has a talent for explaining tough concepts in understandable ways.

One of the best introductions to genetics you can get

"A picture is worth a thousand words". This book utilizes this idea to itake you through from classical genetics to the current understanding of the field in a clear and precise, and sometimes funny, way. Although a casual reader with interest in the subject would love it, the subject matter is handled so comprehensively, that it could well serve as a good textbook on the subject.

A Bit Dated but Good (2011 to my 2005 review)

This is a good book, but there are times when it could be a bit clearer. Sometimes the cartoon style gets in the way. Sometimes there's a sizable jump in thinking from section to section. Still, all in all, it's a good read for an introduction to the subject. I did like the Mendel treatment very much. A good story that's very illustrative of how the basics work.

However, my main point in writing this review is that it could use a little updating. I have the "Updated" edition, which was written in 1991. It's 2005 and the references are way out of date. Check with Amazon to find out if the edition they are selling has a more recent set of references. Despite the age of the book, the material is pretty much independent of recent changes. Amino acids, proteins, Mendel, DNA are still the same today. Some reviewer mentioned that human gene count is out of date. 200,000 in the book vs 20-30K from recent data. OK, but the ideas are still the same. Nevertheless, a newer edition would be welcome.

I would have given the book 4 stars, but the age took away one of the stars.

It's now 2011, and I've occasion to come back to this book. The reason being I came across the Khan Academy of educational videos on the web, and available on YouTube. There is a complete set on genetics. Although, I've only watched two of the set, I'd definitely suggest the set as a good starting point for those who want to learn more about genetics. I think Khan himself adds more to the story that's missing here.

I have no college training in biology, but in the 2 or 3 intro books I'm aware of on genetics, there seems to be a difference in how one approaches the modern part of genetics. Things have certainly changed since Cartoon was published.

I chose this reading because the description said that it had pretty much no damage but just wear from being flipped through once. This was not the case. The first like 9 pages including the cover were all bent and folded. The description said there would be no shipping label on the cover, which was true, but there is sticky residue where the label would've been and it attracts dirt. I can still use it for what I intended to do with it(cut it up and collage), but I do not recommend this seller for collectors
