Pain of Childhood - Insight of Maturity
By Clay Garner
Weiner presents this story as an adult looking back with insight. In the epilogue, he writes: "I have tried not to make this volume a 'cri du coeur' " He succeeds. It reads as a teaching tool, more than an expression of personal anguish and success. Nevertheless, the internal is revealed. The special problems of a prodigy are generalized to the common difficulties of childhood and adolescence. Nicely done.
There are two characters central in this work, Weiner and his father. Starts with twenty three pages on his fathers life before Weiner was born. Immigrated from Russia, eventually masters some forty languages, becomes university professor without a degree. Obviously, his father is also a prodigy. Vegetarian, Tolstoyian, agnostic Jew, world class philologist, disciplined scholar, who translated the complete work of Tolstoy in two years, while having a full time job! Amazing.
Two decisions by Weiner's father seemed key to his childhood. First, to never praise or even commend Weiner and also to harshly condemn him for any minor error. His father recognized his genius and did not want to promote arrogance. Good motive, bad result. Weiner was consumed with self doubt, anguish, confusion, etc. Compares his life to the well known story of J.S. Mill and his father. Explains the similarities and the differences.
Second, his parents kept his Jewish background hidden. More than that, his mother expressed anti-semitic feelings his entire life. When he overheard his father saying they were descendants of Maimonides, he was stunned. The hypocrisy, the betrayal was devastating. This was his mother's doing. He father had worked to promote Jewish scholars and goals. His mother was ashamed. Interestingly, in this work, he expresses respect and love for his severe father, but almost ignores his mother. This self-hatred of being Jewish was not resolved until his marriage, at the age of thirty-one. Weiner has a lot to say on this issue.
Weiner combines childhood events with adult commentary. Makes for interesting reading. For example: "I have never made up my childish quarrel with Jehovah, and a skeptic I have remained to the present day, although I look askance at those skeptics who make their skepticism a positive religion." (42)
Relating that he read much that was over his head, he comments: "The person who must have the explicit connection of his ideas fed to him by his teacher is lacking in the most vital characteristic that belongs to the scholar. Scholarship is a progressive process, and it is the art of so connecting and recombining individual items of learning by the forces of ones whole character and experience that nothing is left in isolation, and each idea becomes a commentary on many others." (66)
Contrasting Harvard and England: "But in the Harvard order of things, a gentlemanly indifference, a studious coldness, an intellectual imperturbability joined with the graces of society made the ideal Harvard man. Thirty years later, I have been shocked rather than surprised by the dry emotional and intellectual sterility into which some of these men have settled." (140)
Writing about Göttingen: "Hilbert was the one really universal genius of mathematics whom I have met. . . . There was in his work a complete grasp of tools and techniques; however he never put into the background the fundamental ideas behind these. He was not so much the manipulative expert as the great mind of mathematics, and his work was comprehensive because his vision was comprehensive." (209)
Many other facinating insights from this world famous scholar. His humility, his endurance, his sincerity, are touching. This volume ends with his marriage at thirty one. I plan to read the second. This book includes a ten page index. No photographs.
I enjoyed it. Recommended.

From insider perspective
By Julia B.
This book is written in a calm and thoughtful style. It gives an insider perspective into the world of a young and very talented person, who has to develop his ability to cope both with his own abilities and with the world around him. This book is great for the parents of gifted children. They may also learn how the cognitive abilities may develop ahead of manipulative abilities ( i.e a child may be able to prove a theorem, but unable to memorize the multiplication table). The book also confirms the old truth that the life of an independent thinker is not an easy one.
